Job summary

Major Gifts Officer - Permanent, Full-time (35 hours / week)

The Alzheimer Society of Durham Region (ASDR) is a community support service organization that provides programs and services to people living with dementia and their care partners in Durham Region. We work closely with other service providers to ensure quality care and support for our clients to achieve our mission to improve the quality of life of people living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and their care partners.

We employ administrative and fund development staff, educators, social workers, social service workers, nurses, occupational therapists, recreation staff, and volunteers who work together as a team to meet the needs of people living with dementia and their care partners.

As a Major Gifts Officer, you will work with the Director of Development to proactively identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with existing and prospective major gift donors ($5,000+) to grow and diversify revenue, ensuring the organization meets its immediate and long-term financial goals. They will also be responsible for securing mid-level gifts ($1,000-$4,999) by managing and nurturing relationships with existing and prospective mid-level donors, guiding them toward increased giving and potential major or planned gift commitments. The Major Gifts Officer will possess a passion for philanthropy and a strong understanding of donor relationship management. They will demonstrate the highest level of ethics and professionalism, exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal skills, and a proven track record of successfully securing mid-level and major gifts.

What you will be doing

  • Actively manage and grow a portfolio of 100-150 donors / prospects.
  • Develop effective fundraising tactics to identify, cultivate, solicit and secure major gifts ($5,000+) from individuals, foundations, and businesses, ensuring personalized engagement and tailored solicitation strategies.
  • Manage and cultivate relationships with mid-level donors ($1,000-$4,999), securing gifts and identifying those with the potential to increase their giving and transition to major or planned giving donors.
  • Conduct prospect research to identify potential major gift and mid-level donors by analyzing donor database and using external online research tools and other sources.
  • Facilitate and participate in all aspects of the gift cycle
  • Craft, prepare and submit compelling and effective grant proposals, corporate funding applications and sponsorship solicitations
  • Facilitate and participate in donor meetings and events
  • Identify opportunities for growth and expansion within existing relationships and potential new partnerships
  • Work collaboratively with senior leadership, board members, and key volunteers to leverage networks and maximize fundraising opportunities.
  • Provide donors with timely and meaningful updates on how their contributions are making a difference including written reports and impact stories.
  • Represent the organization at events and networking opportunities, which may include public speaking on behalf of the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region.
  • Follow organization policies and procedures for maintaining accurate and complete donor records, including documenting donor interactions, maintaining donor privacy, and purposeful prospect and donor relations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development to establish annual and multi-year plans to achieve fundraising goals
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

What you will bring along

Education :

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in fundraising or a related field

Experience :

  • Proven track record of securing major gifts, with 5+ years of progressive experience in donor-centric fundraising within a charitable organization.

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications :

  • Knowledge and experience in major or mid-level giving and a solid understanding of fundraising best practices and donor relationship management
  • Superior communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal)
  • Demonstrated work initiative and ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to interact comfortably, tactfully, and professionally with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management
  • Ability to maintain and work with confidential information
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Comfortable and confident with public speaking
  • Flexible with the ability to work evenings or weekends on some occasions
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is required
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s license and vehicle available to travel throughout Durham Region
  • A clear Police Check with Vulnerable Persons Screening.
  • Familiarity with dementia or health related illnesses is considered an asset.

Travel Requirements

  • Must have insured vehicle and be able to travel throughout Durham Region

Physical Demands

  • No special physical demands are required beyond the performance of general office duties
