Reports to

Senior Manager and Clinical Lead - Speech Language and Hearing Services


Job Purpose

Facilitates or provides access to communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing within the classroom and educational school setting using American Sign Language (ASL). Functions as part of the educational team supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing.


Accountabilities
  1. INTERPRET: Provide sign language interpretation services in various settings, working with students who are deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, and/or oral. Empower students to advocate for themselves, accommodate IEPs, and document anecdotal notes to facilitate integration and curriculum access across Kindergarten to grade 12 within Durham District School Board (DDSB).
  2. COMMUNICATE, COLLABORATE AND EDUCATE: Engage with staff and students to ensure learning goals related to hearing loss and deaf culture are met. Provide education about the needs of students with hearing loss and the interpreter’s role, participate in team meetings, and stay current with board and ministry initiatives.
  3. ENSURE PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY: Maintain AVLIC membership, uphold professional standards, submit proof of membership, and follow DDSB guidelines to ensure safety and success of students.
  4. PURSUE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Attend DDSB and AVLIC PD sessions, and stay informed about sector changes through research.
  5. DOCUMENT: Keep daily logs and note strategies on how students access education through interpretation.
  6. PREPARE MATERIALS: Request and rehearse interpretation materials, ensure accessibility of audio materials, and coordinate with educational partners for scheduling and events.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of relevant computer software as per student IEPs
  • Understanding of hearing loss and equipment (FM systems, sound fields)
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture
  • Proficiency in sign language such as ASL
  • Flexibility, organizational skills, independence, attention to detail
  • Effective safety practices, positive relation-building, teamwork, ethical conduct, and effective communication with all stakeholders
Education

Secondary School Diploma with a recognized community college diploma, university degree from an accredited interpreter training program, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience
  • 1-2 years of field experience
  • 500 hours of practical clinical experience
  • Current First Aid and CPR preferred
Additional Information

This is a 35-hour per week, temporary position following the school calendar (10 months).
