SUPPLY INTERPRETER (American Sign Language)

Title : Supply Sign Language Interpreter

Reports to : Senior Manager and Clinical Lead - Speech Language and Hearing Services

Department : Inclusive Student Services

Job Purpose :

Facilitates or provides access to communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing within the classroom and educational school setting using American Sign Language (ASL). Functions as part of the educational team supporting students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Accountabilities :

  1. INTERPRET : Provide sign language interpretation services in various settings, including working with students who are deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, and/or oral. Empower students to advocate for themselves and their needs, accommodate IEPs, and document daily anecdotal notes to facilitate integration and curriculum access from Kindergarten to grade 12 within Durham District School Board (DDSB).
  2. COMMUNICATE, COLLABORATE AND EDUCATE : Communicate and collaborate with staff and students, educate others on hearing loss, deafness, and deaf culture, participate in team and review meetings, and stay current with board and ministry initiatives.
  3. ENSURE PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY : Maintain AVLIC membership, uphold professional ethics, submit proof of membership, and ensure safety and success of students following DDSB guidelines.
  4. PURSUE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT : Attend DDSB and AVLIC professional development sessions, stay updated on sector changes.
  5. DOCUMENT : Keep daily logs and notes on student access and strategies.
  6. PREPARE MATERIALS : Request and rehearse interpretation materials, ensure accessibility of audio and visual materials, and coordinate with educational partners on scheduling and events.

Knowledge and Skills :

  • Knowledge of relevant computer software and programs as per IEPs
  • Understanding of hearing loss and related equipment (FM systems, sound fields)
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture
  • Proficiency in ASL
  • Flexibility, organizational skills, independence, attention to detail
  • Effective safety practices
  • Ability to develop positive relationships, work collaboratively, and maintain confidentiality
  • Effective communication with parents, staff, students, and the public

Education :

Secondary school diploma plus a recognized community college diploma or university degree in interpreter training, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience :

  • 1-2 years field experience
  • 500 hours practical clinical experience
  • First aid and CPR preferred
