Job description

Position Overview

The Employee Relations Specialist partners with employees, managers, and Human Resources Business Partners to investigate and resolve employee relations issues, ensuring fair and consistent treatment for all employees in line with company policies, procedures, and provincial law. This position reports to the Vice President, Human Resources.

Key Job Responsibilities

Performance Management

  • Answers questions regarding company policies and procedures.
  • Educates managers on legal practices, workplace behaviors, and counseling methods.
  • Conducts intake meetings to identify concerns involving workplace conduct, performance, policy violations, harassment, and other complaints.
  • Reviews information from all parties, applying understanding of policies, employment law, and regulations.
  • Guides on resolving employee relations issues and recommends discipline using the company’s progressive discipline process.
  • Reviews and approves disciplinary documents based on predefined criteria.
  • Participates in disciplinary and termination discussions.
  • Escalates HR issues based on risk and sensitivity assessments.
  • Updates business and HR leaders on issue status and recommendations.

Internal Investigations

  • Seeks labor relations counsel for complex issues or predefined criteria.
  • Prepares documentation for legal and third-party reviews.
  • Leads internal investigations and may represent the organization at hearings.

Training

  • Recommends training topics for managers.
  • Participates in delivering training on disciplinary procedures and policies.

Information Management and Reporting

  • Utilizes the Employee Relations module for tracking activity.
  • Maintains discipline and investigation files.
  • Participates in HR projects as needed.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Human Resources or related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience in Human Resources.
  • Experience in employee relations preferred.
  • Strong understanding of employment laws.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Critical thinking, active listening, and time management skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information discreetly.
  • Strong PC and analytical skills.
  • Estimated travel: 15%.

Salary Range

$64,487 - $85,000, determined based on qualifications, location, experience, skills, and other factors. Some roles may include overtime, bonuses, or incentives.

Work Environment

Primarily office-based, with possible irregular hours, on-call duties, and travel. Adherence to appearance guidelines is required during work and travel.
