We have an exciting opportunity for a Buyer, Materials to join our SCM team. Reporting directly to the Category Manager, Materials & Maintenance, you will be responsible for the effective management of inventory across TransAlta facilities and the development of the Critical Spares and Materials strategy in support of the Company goals. This role is based out of our office in Sarnia, Ontario. It is a full-time, office-based role with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office & 2 days at home). Preferred schedule: 7am to 3:30pm EST.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Review and process purchase requests from internal stakeholders, prepare and issue purchase orders, and maintain accurate documentation daily.
  • Manage and maintain existing purchase orders, ensuring timely updates and efficient handling of changes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to optimize inventory levels, balancing supply and demand to minimize stockouts and excess inventory. Support warehousing operations as needed.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure smooth collaboration and effective procurement.
  • Handle invoice coding and resolve discrepancies, ensuring accurate and timely payment processing and efficient material delivery through the full lifecycle of purchase orders.
  • Expedite purchase orders to maintain continuity of supply and prevent delays in critical operations.
  • Coordinate and monitor shipments, address issues with lost or damaged items, enforce supplier compliance with shipping instructions, and track supplier performance, taking corrective actions as needed.
  • Identify and assess opportunities for cost savings and process improvements that positively impact procurement efficiency and operations.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, processes, and work instructions throughout procurement activities.
  • Utilize analytical skills to assess procurement needs and propose innovative solutions for operational savings.
  • Support SCM team members to contribute to overall department success.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
  • 3+ years of experience in materials management, procurement, or supply chain operations.
  • Knowledge of strategic sourcing, practices, and cost-saving techniques.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Relationship-building skills with internal stakeholders and external suppliers, team-oriented approach.
  • Proficiency with SAP and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Analytical skills to identify process improvements and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Understanding of procurement documentation and compliance (e.g., B3s, CARM, Customs Compliance).
