Job description

The Cook reports to the Culinary Services Manager and is committed to resident safety by providing high-quality care aligned with the organization's vision and mission.

Responsibilities:
  1. Prepare high-quality, nutritious meals according to the menu plan and RHA requirements.
  2. Plate all meals, respecting resident food preferences.
  3. Ensure meals are an enjoyable experience, not just a task.
  4. Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen area and equipment.
  5. Supervise and direct Dietary Aides during food preparation and meal service.
  6. Work within a set budget, limit waste, and adhere to policies and procedures.
  7. Maintain a safe working environment.
  8. Keep required records in the absence of the Food Service Manager, such as menu changes, purchase orders, delivery receipts, and temperature checks.
  9. Assist in the FIFO process for food and supply products.
  10. Collaborate with Food Services and other departments.
  11. Perform any other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:

The following qualifications are required:

  • Current certificate in food handling from a local health authority or recent completion of a comparable food handler training program; training can be provided if needed.
  • Culinary designation/diploma or equivalent is an asset.
  • Experience in healthcare or hospitality settings is an asset.
  • Knowledge of weights, measurements, recipe conversion, and portion control.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Food Premises Regulation, Canada’s Food Guide, and therapeutic diets.
  • Understanding of HACCP, WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety, and Sanitation Code.
  • Physical and mental ability to perform duties.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work well individually and in a team.
  • Empathy and understanding of seniors' needs.
  • Must be free of communicable diseases.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Recent vulnerable sector screening (within last 6 months), TB test results (within last 6 months), or chest X-ray (within last year), and two supervisory references.
