What will you do as an Automation Validation Team Lead?

The Automation Validation (AV) Team Lead plays a pivotal role within LMI by providing leadership and oversight of the AV team and related projects. The Automation and Validation teams' projects include new production automation equipment design, product validation, process engineering, and systems engineering. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that collaborates across departments to ensure our products are designed and manufactured to the highest standards. You will work in a supportive environment with exciting technologies.

Reporting to the Senior Product Engineering Manager and based at our Burnaby head office, you will oversee Automation Designer / Engineers in the AV team.

Project duties include : data analysis, validation test design and analysis, automation equipment design and support, mechanical, electrical, control systems design, and process control and design.

  • Establish standards and guidelines for the Automation Validation team, regularly reviewed and approved by the group manager.
  • Make strategic decisions about automation processes based on inputs from multiple departments.
  • Collaborate with the sensor design team to validate new product features and integrate them into automation infrastructure.
  • Conduct regular design reviews with the team and across departments.
  • Create task lists to break down project assignments appropriately.
  • Develop and oversee standard validation processes based on ISO and WorkSafe BC standards.
  • Use a scientific, data-driven approach to verify and validate equipment designs.
  • Lead Lean-Six-Sigma initiatives to improve product quality and standardization.
  • Design, develop, and optimize micron-level automation equipment for optical manufacturing.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Produce documentation for knowledge transfer (validation, assembly, commissioning, maintenance).
  • Interpret technical data to support mechatronic system design and support.
  • Lead commissioning of new automation equipment or production jigs.
  • Train team members and contribute to performance evaluations.
  • Maintain daily communication with the team and across functions.

What do you need to be successful?

  • Degree / Diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Electrical / Controls Engineering.
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience, focusing on mechanical design and automation controls.
  • Experience leading a team and managing goals and milestones.
  • Strong leadership and management skills for engineering staff.
  • Fundamentals in data analysis for meaningful conclusions.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, EPDM, and mechanical design principles, especially CNC design.
  • Familiarity with electrical wiring diagrams for automation equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic hand and machine shop tools is valued.
  • Good understanding of motion control systems.
  • Knowledge of metrology applications.
  • Understanding of machine vision tools / algorithms is an asset.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 GD&T or ISO GPS standards.
  • Experience with lean processes and development is an asset.
  • Lean and / or Six Sigma Black Belt certification is an asset.
  • Proactive in seeking information to support development activities.
  • Clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with design of experiments and scientific methods.
  • Problem-solving skills with a fact-based approach.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Proficiency with Google G-suite or similar Office software.
  • Coding knowledge (e.g., Python) is an asset.
  • Experience presenting project ideas and analysis.
  • Familiarity with optical systems (lenses, cameras, filters) is an asset.

Salary Range : $97,600 - $139,000
