Job Overview

  • The individual in this role is responsible for leading and managing the planning, coordination, and execution of assigned projects within the Fuel Handling Engineering Department.
  • This includes overseeing all stages of the project lifecycle - from initiation to completion - ensuring adherence to established project management practices and procedures specific to fuel handling systems and related engineering work.
  • The role requires effective leadership of cross-functional project teams, coordination of technical and operational resources, and clear communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Key duties include developing detailed project plans, defining work scopes, estimating budgets and schedules, managing risks, and overseeing contract performance with a focus on fuel handling systems and infrastructure.
  • The individual will facilitate meetings, evaluate progress, and ensure that safety, quality, budget, and timeline targets are consistently met in alignment with departmental and organizational standards.
  • They will also manage changes to project scope and resolve issues as they arise to support successful project delivery.
  • The role involves preparing documentation for project approvals, contributing to the development of business cases, and working closely with other departments and agencies to obtain required permits and approvals.
  • The individual must ensure compliance with internal governance processes and engineering standards relevant to fuel handling systems. Site visits to facilities, vendors, or project locations may be required to assess progress or equipment, and to apply those observations to inform project execution within the Fuel Handling Engineering Department.
  • Depending on project requirements, the individual may also be responsible for supervising technical staff and supporting contract management activities.
  • Strong organizational, technical, and communication skills are essential to effectively lead projects of varying complexity and meet stakeholder and regulatory expectations.

Qualifications

Education :

  • A four-year university degree in engineering or a related technical field is required, along with additional post-secondary coursework in project management and business or asset management. A strong understanding of project management principles, including the five project phases (identification, initiation, definition, execution, and closeout), is essential. Knowledge of economics and business principles is also necessary to support cost estimation, forecasting, and budget management.

Experience and Skills :

  • A minimum of 6 to 8 years of progressive experience in project management, including planning, execution, and closeout of multidisciplinary engineering projects.
  • Direct experience with projects involving fuel handling systems or similar complex industrial equipment is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the competing demands of scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
  • Familiarity with engineering and construction practices in a generating station or heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience preparing cost estimates, managing contracts, developing work breakdown structures, and participating in procurement processes.
  • Proficiency in risk management, change control, and project reporting.
  • Knowledge of commercial contracting methods, contract management, health and safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to lead and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Awareness of environmental protection standards and practices as they relate to engineering projects.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to vendor sites, manufacturing facilities, or project locations as required, including within and outside of Canada.
  • Familiarity with evolving best practices and tools in project management, engineering, and construction.
  • Professional project management certification (e.g., PMP) and / or registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario is considered an asset.
