PhD Student Positions in Geotechnical Engineering

Position Description

There are 3-4 self-motivated PhD student positions for upcoming research projects on the following topics :

  • Numerical modelling of hydraulic fracturing in shale rock
  • Monitoring and numerical modelling of tailings dam seepage, deformation and stability
  • Coupled computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method for liquefaction flow slide simulations

The role involves conducting research, analyzing data, applying programming skills, collaborating with peers and faculty, and contributing to the field of geotechnical engineering.

Start Date : Ideal start dates are September 2025 or January 2026.

Funding : Successful candidates will receive full scholarships covering tuition fees and living expenses, with opportunities to collaborate with industry / international academic partners.

Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanics, or a related field, with a GPA of 80 / 100 or above.
  • Passion for research and innovative problem-solving.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • English proficiency meeting UNBC's requirements, with strong written and oral communication skills.
