About Us

Alberta Correction’s Adult Center Operations Branch is comprised of four adult correctional centres located in Fort Saskatchewan, Peace River, Calgary, and Lethbridge, along with remand centers in Edmonton, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, and Calgary. Alberta Correction’s Young Offenders Branch is comprised of two youth correctional centres located in Calgary and Edmonton.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma plus a minimum of two years of experience
  • Equivalencies will be considered on the basis of 1 year of experience for 1 year of education or 1 year of education for 1 year of experience
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level-C Certification with AED
  • Current Certified Criminal Records Check (with fingerprints and issued within the last six months)
  • Young Offenders Centres will require a current Certified Criminal Records Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check (issued within the last six months)
  • For interest in Young Offender’s Branch experience working with youth will be an asset
  • Experience managing conflict
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Valid Class 5 Canadian Driver’s License (non-graduated)
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

Assets :

  • Previous experience as a Correctional Peace Officer or Correctional Services Worker with our department or equivalent with a Provincial or Federal jurisdiction
  • Previous experience as a police officer or auxiliary police member.
  • Military Service with focus on protection / security
  • Emergency response experience : EMT; Firefighter
  • Youth worker / client group work (e.g. group homes, aboriginal camps)
  • Experience working with adults with serious mental health issues
  • Appropriate related security experience such as senior level security, intense complicated security environment, responsible to make decisions regarding people issues (e.g. mall security, hospital security, airport screening officer, loss prevention officer, commissionaire, armed guard)
  • Bylaw officer experience

To perform the full scope of the role, the position requires employees to don Personal Protection Equipment (PPE’s) and to be clean-shaven where the face piece of the equipment seals to the skin of the face. This is in accordance with the Effective Face Seal, Occupational Health and Safety Code, section 250(2). Exceptions due to medical and religious grounds may be accommodated.

Responsibilities

As a Correctional Peace Officer, you will be a valued member of a team that is essential to maintaining the safety and security of a centre. You will perform a variety of security functions to ensure the care and custody of offenders while also ensuring the safety of centre staff and the public. In this environment, you will monitor offender movement, conduct patrols and counts, manage behaviour, complete searches and complete administrative duties associated with the Correctional Peace Officer role, including report writing and data entry. As you will be working directly with offenders, providing support and guidance, acting as a positive role model, and developing an in-depth knowledge of behaviors and personalities is fundamental in order to succeed in this role.

You will be highly motivated to work with offenders and thrive in a demanding and stressful work environment. Well-developed interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and a professional demeanor are essential to this position. You must have the ability to function effectively in a team environment and possess critical thinking skills. Well-developed verbal and written communication, along with basic computer skills are necessary to ensure success in this position. Proven leadership skills and the ability to manage conflicts effectively are also essential.

Interested candidates must be available for a variety of shifts : days, afternoons, nights, including weekends and holidays. Some positions are casual / on-call with no guarantee of hours. Successful candidates may at times receive shifts on short notice. A successful candidate could be working full-time hours or have no shifts depending on the week. Shifts vary based on the Centre’s needs.

Term Of Appointment

Correctional Peace Officer 1 - $26.46 to $32.45 per hour ($2,050.68 to $2,514.87 bi-weekly)

Correctional Peace Officer 2 - $29.15 to $36.11 per hour ($2,259.25 to $2,798.18 bi-weekly)
