Executive Director at Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE)

Apply your technical skills to help shape Canada’s clean energy future.

Do you have hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical systems? Are you looking to apply those skills in a cutting-edge renewable energy field?

The Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE) is Canada’s leading research facility for tidal stream technology, located on the shores of the Bay of Fundy—home to the world’s highest tides. Our work supports the advancement of marine renewable energy and environmental innovation at a time when clean energy solutions are more urgent than ever.

We are currently seeking a Field Systems Technician with strong electrical and mechanical capabilities to support the development, integration, and maintenance of FORCE’s technical systems. This is a rare opportunity to work on real-world applications of marine technology and renewable energy infrastructure alongside a multidisciplinary team of experts.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Technical Director, the Field Systems Technician will play a key role in the electrical and mechanical design, assembly, and operation of FORCE’s Ocean Sensors Innovation Platform (OSIP) project and other monitoring systems.

This position offers the chance to work with specialized sensor platforms and data communication systems for one of the most dynamic tidal environments on Earth. It demands a practical, technically strong individual who thrives on solving problems and building systems that must operate in challenging marine conditions.

The ideal candidate will be a flexible, collaborative team member who can adapt to evolving project requirements and take initiative in a dynamic technical environment.

THE ROLE

Electrical and Mechanical Design, Maintenance & Operation (50%)

  • Assist in the design and fabrication of electrical and mechanical systems for environmental monitoring platforms
  • Assemble, install, and maintain ocean sensor platforms, junction boxes, power supplies, and communication nodes
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and mechanical schematics
  • Troubleshoot and repair system faults in the field and lab
  • Perform preventative maintenance on monitoring systems and infrastructure
  • Implement safety procedures for working with electrical systems in marine environments
  • Integrate and calibrate a range of environmental sensors (e.g., optical cameras, sonars)
  • Support the deployment and retrieval of instruments for FORCE’s Environmental Effects Monitoring Program (EEMP)
  • Conduct bench and field testing of sensors prior to deployment

Data Communication & Systems Support (10%)

  • Support configuration and maintenance of data acquisition systems
  • Assist with implementation of data communication protocols (serial, ethernet, fibre, wireless)
  • Contribute to development of procedures for data logging and storage

Marine Operations (5%)

  • Participate in on-water operations including deck setup, line handling, and safe gear deployment
  • Assist with preparation, loading, and offloading of vessels and trailers

Documentation & Reporting (15%)

  • Maintain detailed records of system builds, calibrations, and field activities
  • Prepare reports, diagrams, and lessons learned for internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain inventory and service logs for critical infrastructure and assets
  • Embrace changing project needs and shifting technical priorities
  • Contribute to process improvement and operational planning
  • Take initiative in troubleshooting and problem-solving in the workshop and field
