We are looking for a Health and Safety Consultant to help support our growing operation.

Reporting to the Manager, Quality and Risk, the incumbent will be responsible to lead and oversee the implementation, monitoring and reporting of the EM/ANB Health and Safety Program. The Health and Safety Consultant will work closely with the management team and be the safety champion and provide education, advice and support to operational managers, regarding the operation of the programs and their responsibilities within them as they are outlined in related law within the NB OHS Act and company policy. Further developing activities and work collaboratively and support all aspects of safety within the organization and provide expert opinion based on research and best practices while maintaining positive working relationships within your own team, departmental leaders and key stakeholders.

Role & Responsibilities: The Health and Safety Consultant, shall perform tasks including, but not limited to those identified below.

  • Implement and evaluate appropriate practices in the areas of health, safety, security, WHMIS, as well as Liaise between WorkSafeNB and the organization, assist and advise as it related to any form or regulatory requirement, order, and keeping up to date with all appropriate legislation and regulations changes;
  • Provide leadership by participating, supporting and ensuring accountabilities for all initiatives that foster a culture of health and safety and a safe work environment;
  • Champion in coaching, mentoring, and implementing Health and Safety programs;
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable legislation, industry standards and best practices for workplace safety and health. Regularly review and be familiar with all applicable legislation and standards to ensure compliance;
  • Initiate, facilitate, implement, and maintain safety and health preventative and continuous improvement initiatives;
  • Maintain records of all Safety and Health-related information and documentation, reporting as required;
  • Ensure risk assessments are completed and corrective/preventative actions are taken as recommended;
  • Develop policies and programs under recommendations of health & safety committees for the workplace environment;
  • Establish Employee-Employer Joint Health and Safety Committees focusing on employee safety and reducing employee injuries within the workplace;
  • Establish and maintain an effective program and procedures for accident/injury prevention, incident investigation, inspections, safety audits, safety equipment, and required orientation, testing, and training;
  • Ensure an effective training system is provided to all levels of supervisors/management, which will include communication for the key goals of all programs related to health and safety;
  • Provide orientation sessions/information so that employees develop a sense of ownership and trust in all programs; and
  • Gather and report data as it relates to workplace health and safety.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Post-Secondary Education in Health and Safety Management or related field; with a minimum of two (2) years Health and Safety experience in the health care sector or;
  • Post-secondary certificate in a related field with a minimum of three (3) years of safety related work experience or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience;
  • Possess or willing to obtain your certification in Occupational Health and Safety;
  • Completed or willing to complete courses in related health and safety programs;
  • A multi-tasker, energetic, self-motivated, creative, and with a positive outlook who thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Works well independently and is an effective team player;
  • Confidence, with the proven ability to build credibility and strong partnerships with all departments and at all levels;
  • Organized and disciplined approach with proven ability to meet deadlines and commitments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Developed problem-solving skills, with a practical approach;
  • Proven ability to maintain confidence and ensure confidentiality of information and records;
  • Strong analytical research and reporting skills;
  • Ability to write precise policies and procedures, advice and/or instructions;
  • Efficient interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster relationships with both internal and external partners;
  • Complete proficiency with computer technology, software and common applications ; and
  • Bilingualism is a requirement of this position.
