Reporting to the Head of Corporate Affairs & Patient Engagement, the Lead, Communications is responsible for developing and leading strategic internal and external corporate communications to raise AbbVie’s profile and presence in Canada. The incumbent will lead a team responsible for developing therapeutic area and brand communications strategy and executing tactics that support our business objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Understand and advise on effective communication and external engagement practices to enhance a cohesive strategy and ensure that internal and external stakeholders are informed and engaged in AbbVie's priorities and values.
- Collaborate and counsel, when required, with the Canadian Leadership team as well as with the entire cross-functional team members to anticipate future stakeholder behaviors, to better manage external and internal outcomes.
- Forward-looking and understand how to protect and enhance AbbVie’s reputation, internally and externally, while using a variety of channels and communication tools. Mitigate and work proactively to resolve crisis – issues management situations.
- Expertise in establishing a digital channel and social media strategy, in alignment with the Global AbbVie approach.
- Elevate and work on the Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropy strategy for AbbVie in Canada, in alignment with the Global approach.
- Extensive knowledge in managing enterprise communication, including large scale internal employee meetings, and multi-channel corporate communications.
- People manager capabilities to elevate, develop and manage team members, but also manage, engage and collaborate with external vendors and agencies. Ensure all appropriate procurement requirements are used when working with external suppliers and / or vendors.
ABBVIE CORPORATE MARKETING and BRANDING
- Along with other cross-functional members such as medical, government affairs and the Global Corporate marketing team, develop the narrative for AbbVie in Canada, including all collaterals and tools to execute this narrative.
- Lead the development of the external communications strategy for AbbVie in Canada, for all appropriate channels such as the AbbVie Canada website, venues, social media platforms, and all other external tools.
- In partnership with all members of the Corporate Affairs team, lead speaking program trainings and tools for employees to articulate the AbbVie narrative.
- Develop a content calendar to ensure strategic and systemic AbbVie messaging is refreshed and current on all platforms, including social media and the website.
- Work with the Head of Corporate Affairs on a media strategy for the General Manager and other members of the Canadian Leadership team, to ensure consistent AbbVie approved corporate marketing messaging, aligned with the AbbVie brand.
- Measure, track and audit internal processes as needed and required.
- Support the Head of Corporate Affairs in onboarding and the integration of new team members.
PIPELINE and / or THERAPEUTIC AREA SUPPORT
- As required, participate in brand teams and lead communications strategy linked to therapeutic areas or future pipeline. Oversee management and implementation of this strategy.
- Play an active part within brand teams and identify opportunities to work collaboratively with cross-functional colleagues to deliver on brand objectives. Ensure alignment with all members.
- Proactively identify opportunities to collaborate for the identified therapeutic areas across the cross-functional team members, especially with medical, market access & government access, regulatory, patient relations, and commercial. Work with external stakeholder groups in conjunction with the cross-functional team members.
- Ensure alignment of each external-facing activity on therapeutic areas with all internal activities and communications for each therapeutic area.
- Liaise with Global / Area to identify further requirements for external and internal communications.
- Oversee development of a narrative and key messages related to therapeutic areas, and other communications materials for external purposes, including media and other external outlets.

- Strong planning, organizational, budget and time management skills.
- Ability to take key actions and demonstrate behavioral anchors that support AbbVie’s Leadership Attributes.
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's in Communications, Social Sciences or equivalent.
- MBA, Masters in Political or Social Science, Communications (an asset).
- 5-8 years and more working in a communications department of a multi-national or public relations agency preferred : external and internal communication experience as well as crisis communication.
- Experience partnering with various stakeholders, including patient organizations, governments, industry associations and agencies is preferred.
- English and French must be at an advanced level, oral and written.
- Proficient in using MS Office Suite and all related new technologies in relation to the role and the work environment.
- Social media and digital proficiency and understanding of current trends and tools is preferred.
- Experience leading and developing strategy and operating at a senior level.
- Knowledge of the Canadian media market, current trends in social media, new communications tools and best practices, Pharmaceutical or product communications.
- 10% travel within Canada and 5% international travel.
