The Opportunity - Caretaker - full-time, permanent
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement Job Classification: Caretaker II
The Caretaker II will provide maintenance/caretaking services for the various buildings on the Olds College campus. The caretaking staff is an integral part of Olds College by providing a safe and clean environment for students, staff and the public.
Key Job Functions
Any of the duties listed below may be required in your assigned areas or other areas as required
Caretaker
- Perform caretaking tasks such as, but not limited to: general and specific cleaning of offices, stairways, hallways, meeting rooms, classrooms, washrooms, gyms and lockers, labs, and equipment bays
- Operate associated equipment for cleaning including carpet sweeping / vacuuming, steam cleaning, auto scrubbers, floor polishers and some college vehicles
- Scrub/stripping of floors and concrete as well as laying finish
- Clean and service washrooms and locker/shower rooms
- Cleaning of windows, walls, doors, and partitions
- Removal of debris from all disposal bins to the outside bins
Additional Responsibilities
- Report items requiring repairs by submitting maintenance work orders
- Lock and unlock doors to classrooms and offices as requested
- Help with Facility set-ups across Campus
- Seasonal work such as snow removal first 8-10 feet from exits, cleaning of Residence rooms and townhouses
- Act as a pest-control officer as required
- Arrange for and assist Campus Facilities if needed
- Be available “on call” for emergency situations
- Maintain a courteous rapport with fellow workers and clients
Health and safety
- Identify and address hazards in the areas and hazards associated with work processes through regular documented Health and Safety Inspections
- Actively promote and reinforce practices that prioritize the well-being and security of all individuals at Olds College and show a proactive attitude towards safety measures, continuously striving to enhance safety protocols and instill a culture of shared responsibility and accountability when it comes to maintaining a safe and secure work setting.
- Attend training as required by the supervisors and conduct work in a manner that protects the health and safety of themselves and others.
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required
- High school diploma preferred, or demonstrated reading and math skills
- Minimum of six months related work experience, knowledge of standard cleaning procedures and methods
- Minimum of six months related experience working with various types of equipment such as floor polishers, auto scrubbers and carpet cleaners.
- General maintenance experience would be an asset
- Knowledge of various cleaning supplies/chemicals an asset
- Ability to work independently and/or as a member of a team.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills with your team and among the college campus community

Conditions Of Employment
- Have a valid driver’s license
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Able to be on your feet all day, standing, walking and bending
- Able to endure repetitive motions throughout your work day
- Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses.
- Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
