Job Summary:

The Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences at UBC invites applications for a Research Associate (100% FTE) to join Dr. Elizabeth Rideout's laboratory. The role requires expertise in anatomy, physiology, diabetes research techniques, rodent handling, and project management. Responsibilities include overseeing lab operations, supporting grant development, managing budgets, supervising junior staff, conducting diabetes studies, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

The department conducts diverse research in cell and organism biology, with strengths in neuroscience, endocrinology, development, and cancer. It utilizes advanced technologies such as molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, and high-resolution imaging to understand disease mechanisms like cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Designing and performing complex experiments and analyses.
  • Developing animal care and biosafety protocols.
  • Troubleshooting equipment issues.
  • Operating specialized equipment.
  • Managing lab operations and finances.
  • Developing procedures and workflow improvements.
  • Overseeing project progress and research activities.
  • Training staff in techniques and equipment use.
  • Researching new technologies.
  • Writing reports, ethics, and grant applications.
  • Supervising staff and contributing to hiring and performance reviews.
  • Maintaining budgets and safety records.
  • Coordinating training and reagent management.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Biomedical Sciences, or related field. Extensive experience in diabetes research, project management, animal protocols, and sex-based analysis. Minimum of two years' research and management experience.

The expected salary is approximately $83,182 per annum.
