As a member of the military, Medical Assistants are employed to assist and support Medical Officers and Nursing Officers in treating the sick and injured within Canadian Armed Forces units and during operations. This position is available only for part-time employment through the Health Services Reserve.
The Medical Assistant occupation will be renamed Combat Medic in 2025. The transition will involve minor changes in training and career requirements. Registered Practical Nurses/Licensed Practical Nurses serve in the same role as Medical Assistants but have additional opportunities for bedside nursing care during overseas deployments.
Medical Assistants in Reserve Field Ambulance units typically wear army uniforms but may serve with other branches of the Canadian Forces. They mainly work within their unit, usually located in an armoury, supporting the Reserve Force and augmenting the Regular Force as needed. When deployed, they face similar challenges and risks as active forces, working long hours under demanding conditions, including severe weather and mental stress.
If joining the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to your first base, with potential relocations. In the Reserve, you will work part-time with your local unit, typically one night per week and some weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.

Practical Nurses must have completed a diploma and be registered/licensed in good standing. Foreign education may be accepted.
Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification (Basic Training), typically conducted over weekends locally, emphasizing physical fitness. Following this, recruits attend a Soldier Qualification course (~1 month), covering:
Post-basic training, Medical Assistants train at the Canadian Forces Health Services Training Centre in Borden, Ontario, to qualify. Additional courses in communications and driving are also available.
