Description :
As a Youth Care Worker in SCP's transitional housing program, your primary role is to provide trauma-informed, strength-based, relationship-focused, and youth-centred support to the residents of SCP's youth shelter (short-term transitional housing) and peer homes (long-term transitional housing). You will be responsible for youth engagement, crisis response, medication administration, executing case management plans, assisting with programming delivery, youth advocacy, and community engagement for youth between the ages of 16 and 21. Youth Care Workers are expected to comply with industry standards and best practices while adhering to all SCP mandated approaches in the completion of their duties and fulfillment of their role.
Qualifications (Education & Experience)
- Secondary completion required (High school diploma or equivalent)
- Front-line youth care experience preferred
- Preference will be given to applicants with experience working with Indigenous populations, community resources, and supporting youth with exceptionalities, gang involvement, intergenerational trauma / PTSD / CPTSD, exploitation, substance use, and mental health concerns.
Requirements (Skills & Competencies)
- Valid Driver’s License with Driver's Abstract
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Clearance
- Cultural awareness required
- Self-directing with strong initiative; intrinsically motivated
- Strong communication skills & precise documentation
- Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence
- Well-developed time management, organizational skills, & attention to detail
- Preference given to those with CPR / First-Aid (B), Conflict Resolution, Crisis Intervention (DPVS), ASIST, Mental Health First Aid, & Water Safety certifications
Duties & Responsibilities (Outcomes to be monitored quarterly)
Youth Advocacy & Support
- Youth engagement (NHA, trauma-informed, strength-based)
- One-on-one support, chores, shopping, life skills teaching, and daily needs assistance
- Peer home / shelter duties: grocery shopping, laundry, cooking, chores, communication updates, vehicle refuelling & cleaning, bus pass refills
- Scheduling and documenting resident appointments (health, justice, education)
- Transporting or accompanying youth to appointments
- Communicating with Case Plan Coordinator and team about youth issues
- Medication administration and handling
- Assisting with programming
- Crisis response and de-escalation
- Conflict mediation between youth
Case Management
- Implementing youth case plans
- Quarterly case conferences, action plans, eco-maps, & CAFAS completion
- Updating case management documents, notes, journals, communication logs
- Reporting incidents and disclosures
- Communicating with external supports (MSS, Probation, Child & Youth services)
Program Development & Administration
- Attending staff meetings
- Building rapport with MSS representatives
- Reviewing relevant communications and documentation
- Maintaining knowledge of agency policies, procedures, and protocols
