Car Mechanic (Freight Car Repairer)

Job Summary

The Car Mechanic Apprentice inspects, maintains, builds, and repairs railway freight cars and equipment according to Federal and CN regulations. The role is an apprenticeship until graduation to Journey Car Mechanic.

Working Conditions
  • Night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Outdoor work in various weather conditions.
  • Physical activities including bending, lifting (up to 85 lbs.), climbing, and balancing.
  • Potential travel away from the terminal.
Major Responsibilities
  • Inspect cars and components per industry and company standards.
  • Perform scheduled and preventive maintenance and repairs on rail cars.
  • Repair and install parts such as compressors, bearings, and piping.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and measuring instruments.
  • Operate vehicles like cranes and trucks.
  • Prepare reports and record details as per procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be 18 or older and medically fit for duty.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work independently, adapt, and manage stress.
  • Good teamwork, communication, and computer skills.
  • Familiarity with electrical tools and ability to assess parts for wear and defects.
Assets
  • Welding experience and technical training.
  • Knowledge of Railroad Operating Rules.
  • Ability to work autonomously and maintain positive interactions.
