Job description

Summary of the role

The open position is for a Mechanical Engineer within the hydro generator engineering group. The team is responsible for the custom design of large hydro generator components, primarily focusing on North American generator projects. This team operates at the Andritz Hydro Peterborough Generator Center, which features a modern coil and bar manufacturing facility. The role involves technical responsibility for mechanical design throughout all project stages, including proposal, contract design, manufacturing, and installation. The successful candidate will engage in topics such as stress analysis, heat transfer, ventilation, vibration, and bearing analysis.

The Mechanical Engineer will collaborate closely with local engineering, drafting teams, external engineering specialists, project management, manufacturing, and installation teams. Occasional travel to customer locations, project sites, or other Andritz offices will be required.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Collaborating with hydraulic and mechanical design engineers, drafters, and project teams to meet specifications while optimizing costs;
  2. Performing analytical design calculations (stresses and strains) and preparing technical specifications according to internal and industry standards;
  3. Producing engineering instructions for manufacturing and installation;
  4. Updating engineering budgets and schedules in coordination with project teams;
  5. Organizing and participating in design reviews;
  6. Reviewing and sealing technical documentation;
  7. Providing technical support during manufacturing and installation;
  8. Developing and maintaining design tools and practices;
  9. Participating in problem-solving and root cause analysis;
  10. Preparing technical bid documentation as required.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • University degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • Professional Engineer registration is an asset;
  • 1 to 5 years of experience in hydroelectric turbine/generator refurbishment or design, or in heavy mechanical structure repair (e.g., pulp and paper, mining);
  • Customer-oriented attitude, teamwork, interpersonal skills, technical leadership, and continuous development focus;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Availability for occasional travel;
  • Proficiency in MS Office, CAD, and relevant IT tools;
  • Manufacturing and site experience (welding, machining, casting) is an asset.
