Summary

As the Recreation Therapist, you are responsible for providing recreation activities to promote the physical, social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural needs of our residents.

Reporting Structure

This position reports to the General Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Resident Engagement and Event Coordination: Engage residents through conversation to identify recreation wants, needs, and abilities.
  2. Documentation: Record daily engagement, key achievements, challenges, setbacks, adaptations, and other pertinent information for the team.
  3. Assessment and Program Development: Conduct thorough assessments to understand strengths, challenges, interests, and preferences, forming the basis for meaningful therapeutic programming. Implement and coordinate programs, including transportation.
  4. Event Coordination: Coordinate church services, entertainment, and special events. Develop a yearly schedule of events and lead decorating efforts.
  5. Recreation Planning: Plan recreation calendars aligning with Optima Living’s 7 dimensions of wellness.
Administration and Compliance

Prepare monthly recreation reports. Recruit, orient, schedule, and monitor recreation aides and volunteers. Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Use research-based assessments to understand each resident deeply, facilitating meaningful activities and addressing social isolation. Track resident participation, engagement, and progress. Facilitate communication across departments and with the care circle. Utilize Welbi for administrative efficiency and reporting.

Program Development and Evaluation

Assess and research to develop recreation plans. Support and monitor the recreation team and volunteers. Measure program success and redesign as needed. Provide training and develop volunteer appreciation initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned to support operations.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience working with individuals with dementia and high behavioral needs.
  • Experience in a residential care setting preferred.
  • Ability to lead an interdisciplinary team, create program commitment, and lead practice changes.
  • Knowledge of behavioral triggers and intervention strategies.
  • Experience in education, training, and communication with stakeholders.
  • Creativity in developing strategies aligned with personal interests and history.
  • Flexibility to adapt to the needs of male residents.
  • Assessment skills using therapeutic recreation theories and tools.
  • Completion of a Therapeutic Recreation Degree from an accredited institute.
  • Registration with the provincial Therapeutic Recreation association in good standing.

Conditions of Employment
