Job summary

Miller Waste Systems Inc. in Hillsdale, Ontario is seeking a DZ Driver/Picker for a contract full-time position running from October 5, 2026 to December 11, 2026. Start date is immediate, hours are Monday to Friday starting at 6:00 am.

You will operate municipal waste collection vehicles, ensure safety and compliance, perform vehicle inspections, maintain logs, and provide courteous service to residents while following schedules and bylaw requirements.

Qualifications

• DZ driver’s licence with a clean driving record or satisfactory abstract.
• Experience in waste collection or municipal operations is an asset.
• Knowledge of CVOR and WHMIS is desirable.
• Strong understanding of road safety and defensive driving practices.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

• Operate municipal waste collection vehicles with a valid DZ licence.
• Collect residential garbage, recycling, organics, and yard waste per schedules.
• Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Maintain daily logs, route sheets, and inspection reports.
• Provide professional and courteous service to residents.

Reporting To: Route Supervisor

Start Date: Immediately

Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:00am Start Time

Compensation:$27.00 per hour

Responsibilities

As a DZ Driver/Picker, your duties will include but are not limited to:

• Operate municipal waste collection vehicles requiring a valid DZ driver's licence, including rear-load, side-load, top-loader or automated side-loader collection trucks.
• Safely maneuver vehicles on residential streets, laneways, and narrow routes.
• Ensure adherence to all traffic laws, municipal bylaws, and defensive driving practices.
• Position vehicle safely during collection activities and operate hydraulic lifting mechanisms when required.
• Collect residential garbage, recycling, organics, and yard waste according to municipal collection schedules.
• Manually lift and empty waste containers, bags, and bins into the collection vehicle.
• Assist with loading materials and ensuring proper placement within the vehicle to prevent spillage.
• Identify and report improperly sorted or prohibited waste materials.

Safety and Compliance

• Follow all Occupational Health and Safety regulations, municipal policies, and departmental procedures.
• Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including safety boots, gloves, reflective clothing, and hearing protection.
• Maintain situational awareness when working near traffic, pedestrians, and moving equipment.
• Report safety hazards, incidents, or injuries immediately to supervisors.

Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance

• Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles in accordance with provincial regulations.
• Identify mechanical issues or safety concerns and report them through appropriate maintenance channels.
• Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure safe operation of equipment such as compactors and hydraulic systems.

Customer Service

• Provide professional and courteous service to residents during waste collection activities.
• Respond to basic inquiries regarding collection schedules, waste separation, or program guidelines.
• Report service issues, missed pickups, or complaints to supervisory staff.

Administrative Duties

• Complete required daily logs, route sheets, and inspection reports.
• Accurately document service issues or incidents encountered during routes.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatch, and team members regarding route progress or operational concerns.

Competencies & Qualifications

• Previous experience in waste collection, sanitation services, heavy vehicle operation, or municipal operations is considered an asset.
• Valid DZ Driver's Licence with a satisfactory driver's abstract.
• CVOR knowledge or experience is an asset.
• WHMIS training or ability to obtain certification.
• Knowledge of municipal waste collection procedures and environmental regulations.
• Familiarity with safe operation of hydraulic waste collection equipment.
• Strong understanding of road safety and defensive driving practices.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
