Job summary

Norland is seeking a Driller for the Victoria BC area to join our field team. The role involves operating multiple drill rigs, following blast plans, and maintaining accurate hole logs while emphasizing safety and quality on every site.

You will work outdoors in varied weather, coordinate with blasters and drill mechanics, and contribute to a unionized, safety-forward environment with opportunities for training and advancement.

Qualifications

• Experience operating drills Ranger 800, Atlas Copco T30R, Hoe Drill, AirTrack, or DML.
• Experience operating a top hammer hydraulic drill (preferably Sandvik).
• Safety knowledge and experience in the construction industry.
• Willing to work outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions.
• Self-motivated with the ability to work as part of the team.
• Experience with basic power and construction tools.
• Valid Driver’s License (including drivers abstract).
• Fit to work – ability to see, hear, walk, stand, and lift 25kgs.
• Basic English communication (oral and written).
• Good work ethic and a willingness to learn.
• Ability to pass pre-access site medicals/drug and alcohol screening; some projects may require background checks.
• Ability to obtain Security Screening to allow for handling explosives; PAL will satisfy this requirement.

Responsibilities

• Operate drills safely and efficiently per the plan.
• Drill holes, complete logs for each hole.
• Operate within machine and operator capabilities.
• Assist blasters with materials, loading, and stemming.
• Assist drill mechanics and maintain records.
• Work with drillers/helpers to maintain safety on site.
• Promote safety and lead by example on site.
• Maintain cleanliness and remove hazards on site.
• Load/unload materials and equipment as needed.

Job description

Join the Norland team as a Driller in the Victoria BC area. Western Grater Contracting is a highly specialized contractor serving Vancouver Island. Our services include blasting and slope stabilization, drilling, shoring and shotcrete shoring, grouting and anchors. Our experienced team delivers safe and efficient solutions for technically challenging excavation and construction projects, maintaining the highest standards of safety and client satisfaction.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Be able to operate one or more of these drills (Ranger 800, Atlas Copco T30R, Hoe Drill, AirTrack, DML) safely and efficiently
• Drill holes following the blast plan and pattern laid out and complete drill logs for each hole
• Operate the drills within the working capabilities of the machine and the capability of the operator
• Assist blasters if required by laying out materials for each hole, loading materials in/out of magazines, and stemming holes
• Assist Drill mechanics as needed including keeping detailed records of any maintenance issues and other paperwork
• Work with driller helpers to ensure their safety around the drill
• Promote, and lead by example, in a work environment where the safety and health of all employees, subcontractors, and individuals on site are paramount Operate as a productive member of a high-functioning field team to drive results
• Maintain general cleanliness to ensure job sites are clear of hazards, waste, and scrap material
• Load/unload materials and equipment as needed

Qualifications & Skills

• Experience operating one or more of these drills (Ranger 800, Atlas Copco T30R, Hoe Drill, AirTrack, DML)
• Experience operating a top hammer hydraulic drill (preferably Sandvik)
• Safety knowledge and experience in the construction industry
• Willing to work outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions
• Self-motivated with the ability to work as part of the team
• Experience with basic power and construction tools
• Valid Driver’s License (including drivers abstract)
• Fit to work – ability to see, hear, walk, stand, and lift 25kgs
• Basic computer skills and ability to communicate in English, oral and written
• Good work ethic and a willingness to learn
• Ability to pass pre-access site medicals/drug and alcohol screening (some projects may require further checks such as criminal background and medical clearance)
• Ability to obtain Security Screening to allow for handling explosives materials, a Possession and Acquisition License PAL will satisfy this requirement

Working Conditions

• Field environment with extreme outdoor temperatures, working to deadlines, some high-stress situations (e.g., meeting deadlines)
• May be required to work outside of normal work hours to meet the needs of the project
• Will be working with drills in a high dust and noisy environment (PPE including respirator provided)

Compensation

This is a Unionized position with WGC - BC Regional Council of Carpenters. This position will earn Union wages and will have access to extended Union healthcare and benefits, a Union-sponsored pension plan, and additional training through the Training Plan. Expected hourly rate: Unionized wage range for this position is $40.30 - $47.57 per hour (based on candidate’s experience), plus 12% vacation/statutory holiday pay.
