Main Purpose & FunctionThe District Building Inspector conducts technical inspections of buildings during construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance with plans and bylaws such as Building, Zoning, and Sign By-laws.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities- Inspect all types of buildings from foundation to completion.
- Record inspection results online using the Permits & Licenses system (POSSE).
- Research permit status, ownership, and related information using software tools.
- Discuss infractions with owners/contractors and outline necessary corrections.
- Conduct re-inspections and follow-ups on violations.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare inspection reports.
- Review plans and collaborate with other inspectors, taking initiative to assist others.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
- Grade 12 completion, supplemented by post-secondary training in Building Technology or an approved apprenticeship.
- Significant experience in building construction, with experience as a foreman, superintendent, or contractor, or equivalent training and experience.
- Preference for candidates with Building By-Law courses or certification from BOABC.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of building construction methods and materials.
- Strong understanding of building materials' properties and the Vancouver Building By-law.
- Familiarity with related bylaws, regulations, and construction stresses.
- Ability to read plans, evaluate sites, and make accurate compliance decisions.
- Effective communication skills, tactful and impartial enforcement abilities.
- Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather, walk long distances, and climb ladders.
- Proficient in report writing, plan review, and basic computer skills.
A Police Record Check and a clear five-year ICBC driver’s abstract are required. Applicants must submit these documents within 14 days of posting.
