BC Hydro seeks a Distribution Planning Engineer to join the Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. You will lead distribution system planning, identify capacity, reliability, and efficiency improvements, and coordinate capital projects within the Plan–Build–Operate framework.

The role requires an electrical engineering degree, P.Eng eligibility, and extensive experience in power system studies. Travel across the province is possible; a flexible work model may apply.

Qualifications

• Electrical engineering degree or equivalent recognized by Canadian universities.
• Registered or eligible for Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with EGBC.
• Registered or eligible for EIT with EGBC; pathway for Engineer 1 available.
• Demonstrated ongoing development through courses and societies.
• Fully developed technical knowledge in electric utility engineering is preferred.
• Knowledge of BC Hydro systems, policies and project management is expected.

Responsibilities

• Perform distribution feeder analysis and develop 1–3 year and 10 year plans.
• Develop solutions to meet distribution automation requirements.
• Conduct technical and economic planning studies for distribution system needs.
• Identify system improvements and coordinate with capital planning teams.
• Represent planning in public consultation and chair meetings when needed.
• Review work of consultants and ensure adherence to engineering standards.

About the job

What you’ll do

• Distribution Asset Planning has a challenging and exciting opportunity for highly motivated individuals with demonstrated communication, leadership, and cross functional relationship building skills to join the team as Distribution Planning Engineer at BC Hydro's Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. The successful candidate will be capable to effectively perform Distribution System Planning duties and will have the necessary skills to complete short-term and long-term distribution system planning including identification of system issues and initiation of capital projects to mitigate risk as well as assessing system capacity to facilitate customer interconnections. These positions will contribute to the “Plan” function of BC Hydro’s Plan – Build – Operate – Support business model. Key duties and accountabilities specific to Distribution System Planning include:
• Perform distribution feeder analysis and develop mid-term (1-3 year) and long term (10 year) plans to ensure adequate feeder capacity, appropriate feeder reliability performance, optimized overall system performance and system loss management, and measured and prudent risk and capital investment balance.
• Develops solutions to meet distribution automation requirements.
• Conducts and analyzes technical and economic planning studies to identify Distribution system and Distribution feeder requirements to reliably and efficiently supply load.
• Develops plans to optimize distribution system and distribution feeder performance taking into consideration load growth and customer requirements, operational needs, corporate objectives, and long term strategic goals.
• Identifies and initiates system improvement and expansion requirements and secures financial support for implementation; coordinates with other departments’ capital plan execution.
• Develops responses to regulatory related matters.
• Manages projects of some complexity including planning and managing resources and coordinating work to ensure that commitments are met.
• Represents the planning and engineering function in the public consultation process.
• May chair meetings to address engineering problems.
• May assign work and give instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers and technical support staff.
• Reviews work of consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, achievement of required results, and adherence to accepted engineering practice.
• Develops and maintains effective professional relationships with internal and external colleagues in order to determine relative priorities and assess the impact of work on others and resolve issues of concern.
• Works under general direction, with work assigned in terms of broadly defined objectives and budget limitations.
• Advice of manager is sought in critical areas which impact the work of others.
• Completed work is accepted as accurate, with overall plans and recommendations reviewed for feasibility, soundness of judgment and achievement of objectives.

What you bring

• Electrical engineering degree (preferably power systems) or equivalent recognized by Canadian universities.
• A minimum of 8 years relevant experience for Senior Engineer, a minimum of 4 years of experience for Intermediate Engineer 2.
• Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with the Engineers and
• Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) for Senior Engineer or Engineer 2.
• Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC) for Engineer 1.
• Demonstrated ongoing development such as self-study, attendance at technical and administrative courses and participation in technical and professional societies.
• Fully developed technical knowledge in electric utility engineering and power system studies is preferred.
• Knowledge of various BC Hydro systems, policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of project management, including cost control and project administration.
• Ability to analyze and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems with considerable independence and understand and appreciate implications of costs, operability and safety.
• Ability to analyze, interpret and evaluate various complex technical studies and data of considerable complexity and diversity, define and develop criteria and cost estimates for complex plant modifications and/or other major projects, and develop significantly complex computer models and programs for forecasting or scheduling purposes.
• Demonstrated technical writing and interpersonal skills; excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
