Job summary

The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking a Permanent Distribution and Collection Operator to maintain CGS water distribution and wastewater collection systems from Rayside Depot. This full-time role requires 80 hours bi-weekly; shift work may be required, and a valid driver’s licence is needed.

You will perform hydrant inspections, emergency repairs, piping work, preventative maintenance, and field tests. You must have Grade XII, be certified as an Operator in Training with plans to achieve Water

Qualifications

• Secondary school completion is required.
• Operator in Training certification with plan to achieve Level 1 in 18 months.
• Water Distribution Level 1 and Wastewater Collection Level 1 within 18 months.
• Minimum 1 year experience in water/wastewater operations.
• Knowledge of Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act and ability to complete MMMS Crew Cards.
• Physically capable and able to operate a CGS vehicle with valid license and driving history.
• Excellent English communication, both written and verbal.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment to maintain CGS water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
• Perform hydrant inspections and repairs as needed.
• Carry out layout, fit, install, and maintain piping systems, fixtures and equipment.
• Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs on assets; flush mains and operate valves.
• Collect samples and perform routine field tests (pressure, valve inspections).
• Report defects to the supervisor and maintain safety compliance with CGS Safety Manual.

Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly

Rate of Pay: $31.73 to $36.27 per hour

The start date will follow the selection process.

Main Function: Operate equipment and perform functions to maintain the City of Greater Sudbury’s (CGS) water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems.

Characteristic Duties

Under the supervision of a Distribution and Collection – Supervisor II.

• Perform operational and maintenance functions necessary to water distribution and collection systems for the safe and efficient delivery of service to end users.
• Perform emergency repairs to distribution and collection systems promptly and safely to restore delivery of service.
• Carry out hydrant inspections in an assigned area, ascertain whether the hydrants are in operable condition and conduct repairs when necessary.
• Report immediately to the Distribution and Collection – Supervisor II any defective or inoperable infrastructure.
• Layout, fit, assemble, install, and maintain piping systems, fixtures and equipment for water and sewer installation.
• Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs to distribution and collection assets. Flush watermains, operate valves and respond to water quality concerns.
• Collect samples and perform routine field tests (e.g. pressure testing, valve inspections, etc.) as directed.
• Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Training

• Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
• Must be certified as an Operator In Training, and willing and able to complete certification as Water Distribution Level 1 and Wastewater Collection Level 1 within eighteen (18) months. Successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain certification in good standing.

Experience

• Must have a minimum of one (1) year experience in water/wastewater operations.

Other Requirements

• Knowledge of Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act.
• Ability to effectively complete M.M.M.S. Crew Cards.
• Must be physically capable of performing the characteristic duties.
• Prepare detailed and accurate reports and exercise good judgement in dealing with emergency conditions and with the general public.
• Able to communicate effectively with mobile radio equipment.
• Demonstrate interpersonal skills in dealing with the public, staff, and outside agencies in a courteous and effective manner.
• Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
• Satisfactory health, attendance, and former employment history.
• May require the use of a CGS vehicle on CGS business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence, and have an acceptable driving record.

Development opportunity rate of pay: $30.14 to $34.46 per hour. The successful candidate will be paid at the reduced rate until the minimum qualifications have been met.
