Job summary

The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking a Distribution and Collection worker to maintain water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The role involves operating equipment, performing maintenance, and conducting tests to ensure safe service delivery.

Typical duties include hydrant inspection, emergency repairs, and reporting defects. Requires English proficiency, health and safety knowledge, and the ability to drive CGS vehicles if needed.

Qualifications

• Secondary School completion required.
• Operator In Training certification required; willing to obtain Level 1 within 18 months.
• Water Distribution Level 1 and Wastewater Collection Level 1 certifications must be obtained.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment for water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
• Perform emergency repairs to restore service promptly and safely.
• Carry out hydrant inspections and repairs as needed.
• Report defects to supervisor immediately.
• Install and maintain piping, fixtures, and equipment for water/sewer.
• Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on assets.
• Collect samples and conduct routine tests per direction.
• Maintain safety knowledge per CGS policies and provincial laws.

Main Function:

Operate equipment and perform functions to maintain the City of Greater Sudbury’s (CGS) water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems.

Characteristic:

Under the supervision of a Distribution and Collection – Supervisor II.

Duties

• Perform operational and maintenance functions necessary to water distribution and collection systems for the safe and efficient delivery of service to end users.
• Perform emergency repairs to distribution and collection systems promptly and safely to restore delivery of service.
• Carry out hydrant inspections in an assigned area, ascertain whether the hydrants are in operable condition and conduct repairs when necessary.
• Report immediately to the Distribution and Collection – Supervisor II any defective or inoperable infrastructure.
• Layout, fit, assemble, install, and maintain piping systems, fixtures and equipment for water and sewer installation.
• Perform preventative maintenance and corrective repairs to distribution and collection assets. Flush watermains, operate valves and respond to water quality concerns.
• Collect samples and perform routine field tests (e.g. pressure testing, valve inspections, etc.) as directed.
• Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

• Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.
• Must be certified as an Operator In Training, and willing and able to complete certification as Water Distribution Level 1 and Wastewater Collection Level 1 within eighteen (18) months. Successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain certification in good standing.

Experience

• Must have a minimum of one (1) year experience in water/wastewater operations.

Other Requirements

• Knowledge of Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act.
• Ability to effectively complete M.M.M.S. Crew Cards.
• Must be physically capable of performing the characteristic duties.
• Prepare detailed and accurate reports and exercise good judgement in dealing with emergency conditions and with the general public.
• Able to communicate effectively with mobile radio equipment.
• Demonstrate interpersonal skills in dealing with the public, staff, and outside agencies in a courteous and effective manner.
• Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.
• Satisfactory health, attendance, and former employment history.
• May require the use of a CGS vehicle on CGS business. Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence, and have an acceptable driving record.

Development opportunity rate of pay: $30.14 to $34.46 per hour. The successful candidate will be paid at the reduced rate until the minimum qualifications have been met.
