Job summary

Haida Gwaii Society for Community Peace (HGSCP) in Masset, BC, seeks a full-time Transition House Director to lead the Transition House and its Support Worker team. The role oversees safe shelter services for women and families, with weekend on-call coverage and a start date of January 1, 2027.

You will report to the Executive Director, ensuring services are delivered confidentially, compliant with policies and contracts.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Manage, guide, and evaluate the Transition House Support Worker team to ensure services meet clients’ needs.
• Recruit, train, mentor, and conduct performance reviews for program staff.
• Manage labour relations and staff scheduling per BCGEU Collective Agreement.
• Participate in rotating weekend on-call coverage for emergencies.
• Oversee client-centred program delivery and adherence to policies, laws, and budgets.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners on client goals, plans, referrals, and case management.
• Review incident reports and maintain confidential program records and statistics.
• Oversee residence safety, maintenance, and general operations.
• Work with the Executive Director to set program standards and support long-term planning.

The small village of Masset is the largest town on Haida Gwaii. About the Opportunity

HGSCP is looking for a full-time Transition House Director to join our team in Masset, BC. This is a 35-hour-per-week position, generally working Monday to Friday, with rotating weekend on-call coverage for emergencies.

Please note: This is a confirmed upcoming vacancy, with the full-time position beginning 1 January 2027. There may also be an opportunity for the successful candidate to complete part-time orientation and cross-training in November and December 2026, with some training available virtually. We are beginning the search early so candidates relocating to Haida Gwaii have plenty of time to plan their move and settle into the community.

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Transition House, ensuring services are delivered safely, confidentially, and in accordance with the organization’s policies, ethics, philosophy, and contractual obligations.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for leading the Transition House Support Worker team and overseeing programs that provide safe shelter and support for women experiencing gender-based violence, homelessness, and substance use concerns. This includes the Supportive Recovery program, which provides moderate-level residential support for women preparing to enter substance use treatment or returning to the community following treatment.

Specifically, your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Managing, guiding, and evaluating the Transition House Support Worker team to ensure services meet clients’ needs
• Recruiting, training, mentoring, and completing performance reviews for program staff
• Managing labour relations matters and ensuring staff scheduling aligns with the BCGEU General Services Collective Agreement
• Participating in rotating weekend on-call coverage and responding to urgent staff or client emergencies as required
• Overseeing client-centred program delivery in accordance with agency policies, legal requirements, service agreements, and budgets
• Collaborating with internal teams and external service providers on client goals, service plans, referrals, and integrated case management
• Reviewing incident reports, maintaining accurate and confidential program records, and submitting required statistics and reports
• Overseeing the safety, maintenance, security, inventory, and general operation of the residence
• Working with the Executive Director to establish program standards, assess service effectiveness, and support long-term planning

About You

To qualify, you will have 3+ years of direct program delivery experience in social services or a related sector, along with previous supervisory, leadership, or program management experience. You will also bring relevant education, training, or an equivalent combination of experience in the human or social services field.

HGSCP is particularly interested in applicants who understand the realities of working in a small, remote community and who bring strong local knowledge, transferable leadership experience, or a willingness to grow into parts of the role.

In addition, background or skill in the following will be considered highly-valued assets:

• Experience supporting survivors of gender-based violence, trauma, homelessness, substance use, or addictions
• Experience supervising staff, providing feedback, and managing performance
• Experience working in a unionized environment or with collective agreements
• Familiarity with community programs, provincial services, and referral networks
• Experience with non-profit, women’s services, or children and family programs
• Strong planning, organization, time management, and digital skills
• Understanding of trauma-informed, client-centred, and feminist approaches
• Experience working with First Nations, Indigenous communities, or remote communities
