Job summary

Manulife Financial seeks a Director of Software Engineering to lead the Shared Services function within Global Technology from Waterloo. You will establish a scalable operating model, drive engineering excellence, and accelerate AI-enabled development practices across multiple teams to deliver measurable business value.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS, SWE, IT or equivalent.
• 12+ years in software engineering/tech delivery/engineering leadership.
• 5+ years leading engineering managers or distributed teams.
• Experience building or operating engineering shared services/enablement orgs.
• Strong knowledge of modern software engineering practices (CI/CD, DevSecOps, cloud-native).
• Experience leading production support, incident management, and resilience programs.
• Proven ability to influence across matrixed organizations.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mature the Software Engineering Shared Services operating model.
• Drive engineering delivery excellence and release management.
• Establish standards, guardrails, and reusable practices across delivery, security, GitHub workflows, releases, and metrics.
• Champion AI-assisted engineering and autonomous SDLC practices.
• Partner with Architecture, Cybersecurity, Platform, Operations and QE teams to align with enterprise standards.
• Lead incident response, vulnerability remediation, disaster recovery readiness, and production stability initiatives.
• Build and coach a high-performing team of engineering leaders and engineers.
• Leverage metrics and dashboards to improve demand, delivery health, and cost optimization.
