Role Overview:
We are seeking a Director of Account Management to lead our account management team and nurture relationships with our partner institutions across the U.S. and Canada. In this senior role, you will be the strategic advisor for our clients (colleges and universities), ensuring they derive maximum value from the PayMyTuition platform. You will oversee a team of account managers and work cross-functionally to deliver exceptional service. This is a high-impact, in-office role for a proactive leader passionate about client satisfaction and growth in a tech-enabled setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead & Mentor Team: Oversee and coach an account management team, fostering a culture of customer success and high performance.
- Client Relationship Management: Manage a portfolio of educational institution clients (universities and colleges) across North America, building strong executive-level relationships and acting as a trusted strategic advisor to each institution.
- Client Satisfaction & Support: Ensure outstanding client satisfaction by promptly addressing any operational or service issues. Coordinate with internal teams (Support, Product, Operations) to resolve problems quickly and effectively, keeping partners happy and confident in our solutions.
- Retention & Growth: Drive client retention and loyalty. Identify opportunities to expand usage of PayMyTuition’s services within each account and uncover new revenue streams (upselling additional products or features) to grow account value.
- Implementations & Onboarding: Take a hands-on role in new client implementations and deployments. Work closely with our implementation specialists to ensure new institutional partners are onboarded smoothly, with minimal disruption, and gain full value from our platform from day one.
- Product Expertise: Develop a deep understanding of the PayMyTuition platform and full product suite. Educate clients on new features and fintech solutions we offer, positioning yourself as the subject matter expert who can help institutions leverage our technology to meet their goals.
- Account Monitoring: Monitor account health and performance metrics regularly. Proactively identify risks (e.g. decreased usage, service issues) and opportunities (e.g. new departments or programs that could use our platform) within accounts. Prepare and present quarterly business reviews and account plans to clients and internal executives, ensuring transparency on progress and strategic next steps.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Sales, Marketing, Product Development, and Finance teams to ensure client feedback and needs are communicated. Advocate for product enhancements or process improvements that will benefit our institutional partners, and support company-wide initiatives to increase revenue and improve the client experience.
- Industry Presence & Travel: Act as an ambassador for PayMyTuition at industry conferences, client campus visits, and events. Travel occasionally across the U.S. and Canada (approximately 10–20%) to represent the company, deepen client relationships, and stay current on higher education and fintech trends. (Note: Valid passport and ability to travel internationally within North America are required.)
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: 7+ years of experience in account management, client success, or enterprise customer relations, preferably in SaaS, fintech, or edtech environments. A proven track record of managing and growing B2B client accounts is essential.
- Higher Education Knowledge: Background in working with higher education institutions is highly valued (e.g. selling to or partnering with universities/colleges). Understanding the unique needs and cycles of the education sector will be a big plus.
- Leadership: Demonstrated experience overseeing a team of account managers or customer success professionals. You have strong people management skills – able to mentor, motivate, and develop talent – and have successfully led teams to meet or exceed targets.
- Business Acumen: Solid grasp of revenue models and account economics. Experience with P&L responsibility or contributing to financial goals for a client portfolio (renewals, upsells, cross-sells) is important. You can identify growth opportunities and mitigate risks in a revenue context.
- Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Able to build trust with C-level and VP-level client stakeholders, lead quarterly business reviews, and navigate complex discussions with professionalism and clarity. Strong presentation skills are a must.
- Problem-Solving: Sharp analytical and problem-solving abilities. Comfortable handling escalations or complex operational issues for clients, and adept at coordinating internal teams to drive solutions. Project management skills and attention to detail will help you juggle multiple institution accounts effectively.
- Tech & Tools: Proficiency with CRM software (HubSpot or similar) and data-driven account management practices. You utilize data to inform client strategies and are familiar with tracking account metrics (usage, satisfaction scores, etc.).
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Communications or a related field (or equivalent professional experience). An MBA or advanced degree is a bonus but not required.
- Travel Flexibility: Willingness to travel occasionally within Canada and the U.S. (approximately up to 20% of the time) for client meetings, conferences, and industry events as needed.
