Job summary

University of Manitoba seeks a Director of Human Research Ethics and Strategic Advisor to the Vice-President (Research and International). This senior role combines leadership of the ethics program with shaping institutional strategy, policies, and major research initiatives to advance ethical governance and compliance across UM's research portfolio.

The role requires a PhD, extensive regulatory knowledge, and proven leadership in change management, policy development, and stakeholder engagement

Qualifications

  • PhD in a discipline related to research with human participants is required.
  • Five years of related experience in a human research-related field.
  • Sound knowledge of Canada’s and Manitoba’s laws, policies, regulations and guidelines governing research with human participants including the TCPS2, FIPPA and PHIA.
  • TCPS2 CORE training and PHIA training/certifications required.
  • Experience leading organizational change or contributing to strategic direction preferred.
  • CCEP certification preferred.
  • Ability to think analytically, logically and strategically.
  • Experience interpreting policies, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Ability to analyze complex documents and manage deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee implementation of systems and workflows for timely ethics submissions and reviews.
  • Direct research ethics education for faculty, students, and REB members.
  • Support compliance with regulations, guidelines and policies for human research ethics at UM.
  • Lead development and revision of policies under VPRI jurisdiction.
  • Coordinate approvals through Legal, UMFA, SCUR, Board, and Senate.
  • Collaborate with UM leadership on SRP and strategic initiatives.
  • Liaise with external partners and stakeholders to advance research priorities.
