Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara (BBBSN) is actively seeking dedicated individuals that are willing to contribute their time and expertise to our agency in the capacity of volunteer Board Director. As a Board Director, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the strategic direction of our organization and contributing to our mission of empowering young people to reach their full potential through mentorship.

Since 1937, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara has been providing vulnerable youth with the opportunity to experience life-changing mentorship. Support from a caring adult mentor enables youth to develop the skills and confidence necessary to overcome adverse childhood experiences and thrive.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara has a skills-based Board, and applicants with skill sets that are currently underrepresented on the Board will be considered preferred candidates. As an inclusive organization that strives to reflect the diversity of our community at all levels, the BBBSN Board of Directors considers diversity an important aspect of recruiting an effective Board.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership - Provide insight and guidance in the development and execution of organizational strategies to achieve our mission and goals.

Advocacy - Advocate for the importance of mentorship and actively support initiatives that promote the well-being of all children and youth in our community.

Fundraising - Actively participate in fundraising efforts to ensure the financial sustainability of our programs and services.

Governance - Uphold the highest standards of governance by actively participating in board meetings, committees, and contributing to the overall effectiveness of the board.

Networking – Utilize personal and professional networks to enhance the visibility and impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara.

Qualifications:

• A strong commitment to the mission, vision and values of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

• Ability to think strategically and contribute to the development and execution of organizational strategies, and ongoing diversity and inclusion initiatives.

• A demonstrated commitment to community involvement and advocacy for all children and youth.

• Appreciation for and commitment to justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.

• Strong communication and critical thinking skills.

• Board Directors must live or work in the Niagara region.

• Previous experience in a leadership or governance role is an asset.

Commitment:

BBBSN Board Directors commit to a two-year renewable term. Board Directors are expected to attend monthly board meetings, participate in committee work, and engage in agency activities and fundraising events. The time commitment is estimated to be 5 to 10 hours per month.

Board Directors commit to share their time, talent and treasure with the agency. This includes making a commitment of a monthly financial donation (via Big Believers) of an amount that they are comfortable with.
