The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University.

The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created to ensure its financial viability by overseeing its services and financial affairs. It operates under the AMS Constitution, guided by its Mission and Operating statements.

This position is a volunteer honoraria role.

Incorporated under the Ontario Corporations Act in 1969, AMS Inc. is a non-share capital corporation supporting the interests of the AMS. The Board of Directors, comprising AMS student members, alumni, the Society executive, and the General Manager, governs the organization, focusing on corporate governance, finance, audit, risk, and personnel matters. Directors are legally bound to act in the best interests of AMS Inc. and its members.

Time Commitment, Eligibility, and Remuneration

  • Positions available for 1 or 2 years, from May 2024 to April 2025 or May 2024 to April 2026, with a commitment of 4-6 hours/week.
  • This is a volunteer role; directors may receive an honorarium upon successful completion of duties.
  • Student directors cannot work or volunteer for any other AMS service during their tenure.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in at least 18 credit units (or 60% of a full course load) at the time of application and throughout their term. Full-time students must have paid all AMS mandatory fees. Part-time students may be eligible if they have opted into the full student fee slate prior to hiring.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and commit to the objects, policies, and operations of the AMS.
  • Maintain understanding of the organization's current and projected financial position.
  • Attend all Board meetings and review agendas beforehand, asking questions as needed.
  • Critically evaluate the financial and strategic operations of the AMS and suggest improvements.
  • Participate actively in assigned committees, including chair responsibilities if applicable.
  • Assist in the transition process after new Board elections.
