The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University.

The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution.

This is a volunteer honoraria position.

Time Commitment, Eligibility and Remuneration

1 or 2 year positions available, from May 2024 to April 2025, and May 2024 to April 2026 with a time commitment of 4-6 hours/week. This is a volunteer position, but directors are eligible for an honorarium if they successfully complete their duties. Student directors of the Board are ineligible to work or volunteer for any AMS service, office, or commission during their tenure on the Board of Directors.

All AMS volunteers must be enrolled in at least 18.00 credit units (60 of a full course load as determined by one's program) both at the time that they apply and for the duration of their term, and have paid the full slate of AMS mandatory fees. Part-time students are eligible if they have opted-in to the full student fee slate prior to hiring. Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of application.

Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of, and a commitment to, the objects, policies, and operations of the AMS.
  2. Acquire and maintain an understanding of the corporation's financial position, both current and forecasted.
  3. Attend all Board meetings and be aware of the Board of Directors policy on absences.
  4. Be familiar with the agenda prior to each meeting, and ask questions of relevant individuals if necessary, in order to facilitate full participation in the meeting.
  5. Critically evaluate the overall financial and strategic operations of the AMS and make suggestions to improve them.
  6. Actively participate in any standing or ad hoc committees to which membership has been assigned, including performing committee chair responsibilities.
  7. Help in the transition process after the election of the incoming Board.

The AMS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of age, race, religion, colour, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.
