Job summary

Join our team as an Investigator, where you'll tackle complex investigations, collaborate with law enforcement partners, and help ensure businesses operate in compliance with consumer protection legislation. Your work will have a direct impact on safeguarding Albertans and strengthening public confidence in the marketplace.

Role Responsibilities

The Investigator conducts increasingly complex investigations under consumer protection legislation and delegated Criminal Code provisions. This role independently assesses complaints, gathers evidence, recommends enforcement actions, supports regulatory proceedings, and works collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure compliance and accountability.

Your key responsibilities include

  • Conducting investigations into consumer complaints and legislative offences using established investigative techniques, evidence-gathering methods, and enforcement tools.
  • Collecting and analyzing evidence, preparing statements, researching legislation, and obtaining search warrants or production orders when required.
  • Recommending enforcement actions, including warnings, undertakings, administrative actions, prosecutions, and other compliance measures.
  • Inspecting regulated businesses and reviewing financial and business records to assess compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Preparing court and hearing documentation, affidavits, summonses, subpoenas, and investigative reports.
  • Collaborating with law enforcement agencies, Crown Prosecutors, government partners, and industry stakeholders on investigations and enforcement activities.
  • Supporting court proceedings and administrative hearings by acting as a witness and providing investigative expertise.
  • Providing information and guidance to consumers, businesses, and internal stakeholders regarding rights, responsibilities, and legislative requirements.
  • Contributing to training, knowledge sharing, policy discussions, and consumer awareness initiatives.
  • Building partnerships with enforcement agencies and community organizations to support public education and coordinated enforcement efforts.

Qualifications

University degree in Criminology, Law enforcement, Investigations or a related field, in addition to:

  • Two years of experience conducting investigations.
  • Ability to be appointed as a Peace Officer under the Peace Officer Act.
  • Strong investigative, analytical, organizational, conflict resolution, and communication skills.

Assets

  • Experience conducting investigations in a regulatory, compliance, enforcement, or consumer protection environment.
  • Prosecution experience or experience supporting legal proceedings.
  • Knowledge of consumer protection legislation and investigative best practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Criminal Code, Alberta Evidence Act, Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Provincial Offences Procedure Act, Competition Act, and Civil Enforcement Act.
  • Experience collaborating with law enforcement agencies, Crown Prosecutors, and regulatory partners.
  • Understanding of accounting principles and financial record analysis

One (1) full-time permanent position available. 36.25 hours of work per week

Location: Commerce Place Building, 10155-102 Street, Edmonton.

Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC).
