Job summary

Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is seeking a Designated Substances Technician for a 6-month term assignment at the Confederation Education Centre. The role supports OH&S management, inspects designated substances, and maintains detailed records. Location: Nepean with 35 hours/week and ESP salary range.

Requirements include 3–5 years in OH&S, asbestos experience, and knowledge of Ontario regulations. Travel between OCDSB sites may be required.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.
• 3-5 years experience in occupational health and safety; with direct experience managing asbestos and other designated substances.
• Knowledge of the OHSA Act and Ontario Regulations related to designated substances.
• Ability to interpret technical reports and extract critical information.
• Ensure work involving designated substances complies with policies and legislation.
• Proficiency in performing inspections and ensuring OHSA compliance.

Responsibilities

• Support OCDSB OH&S management system and related health and safety duties.
• Inspect and evaluate designated substances on OCDSB sites.
• Interpret technical reports and provide guidance related to designated substances.
• Maintain detailed records and prepare reports and documentation.
• Assist in investigations conducted by the Ministry of Labour if required.
• Contribute to training materials and presentations for staff.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Team Manager, Occupational Health and Safety, the Designated Substances Technician is involved in various activities in support of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) OH&S management system, including the inspection and evaluation of designated substances, interpretation of technical reports and information, provision of advice and guidance related to designated substances and maintenance of detailed records and other related health and safety duties.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field.
• 3-5 years experience in occupational health and safety; with direct experience managing asbestos and other designated substances. Experience working in a unionized environment is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario and associated Regulations (particularly those related to designated substances), Ontario Environmental Protection Act and Regulations, and other relevant Acts, Regulations, Standards and OCDSB policies and procedures.
• Ability to interpret technical reports related to designated substances, identify errors or omissions, and transfer critical information into a central record.
• Ability to ensure that work involving designated substances is being performed in compliance with relevant policies, procedures, and legislation.
• Proficiency in performing inspections and ensuring compliance with OHSA safety standards.
• Ability to provide information and/or support during investigations being conducted by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
• Sound judgment in recognizing potential hazardous situations and recommending effective courses of action.
• Strong communication skills, including writing and verbal communications (to clients inside and outside of the organization). Written communication skills for preparing correspondence, reports, training materials; Presentations skills for training/workshops.
• Must use tact, diplomacy and discretion in daily interactions.
• Proficiency with computer applications, including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, and ability to use electronic mail.
• Organization and time management skills required for prioritizing multiple deadlines and demands.
• Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
• Access to reliable transportation for travel between OCDSB sites.
