The Opportunity

Reporting to the Vice President of Technology, the Deputy Director, Business Intelligence is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for bringing our data strategy to life.

In this pivotal role, you’ll help shape and drive the organization’s data vision — ensuring we have the systems, tools, and insights needed to fuel fundraising growth and deepen supporter engagement.

You’ll also lead the development and management of our data strategy, optimize our CRM systems, and strengthen the data infrastructure — including data warehousing and visualization — to transform data into actionable intelligence.

Key Accountabilities

Data Strategy, Analytics & Innovation (45%)

  • Lead the design, execution, and evolution of UNICEF Canada’s enterprise Data & Insight Strategy to support fundraising, operations, advocacy, and executive decision-making.
  • Oversee data warehouse and Power BI platforms, ensuring performance, data quality, automation (ETL), and integration with core systems like CRM (Raiser’s Edge/Salesforce) and finance.
  • Build and grow our predictive analytics and AI capabilities — including churn models, Lifetime Value (LTV) scoring, segmentation, and giving propensity forecasts — to inform strategy and optimize resource allocation.
  • Develop a data roadmap aligned with organizational priorities, tracking milestones for improved reporting, AI models, and user adoption.
  • Promote a culture of data literacy by creating training, guidelines, and support tools that empower teams to self-serve analytics and visualize data using Power BI.
  • Ensure robust compliance with privacy laws (Law 25, PIPEDA), embedding governance, access control, and ethical data practices into all operations.
  • Monitor trends in data science, AI, and nonprofit analytics, introducing innovative tools and methodologies to enhance supporter engagement and efficiency.
  • Maintain a focus on data accuracy, completeness, and relevance to ensure consistent, high-quality insights.
  • Lead UNICEF Canada’s CRM strategy, ensuring performance, integration, and data alignment across fundraising and supporter engagement functions.
  • Drive CRM modernization, including current-state assessment, gap analysis, and planning for potential migration to Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud.
  • Transform the CRM into a dynamic insights hub, enabling real-time reporting, supporter profiling, campaign tracking, and predictive analytics.
  • Establish and enforce data quality programs and governance frameworks to ensure CRM accuracy, usability, and security.
  • Collaborate with IT and business units to ensure full integration of the CRM with the data warehouse, financial systems, and digital platforms.
  • Champion continuous improvement, collecting user feedback, benchmarking sector practices, and prioritizing feature enhancements.
  • Maintain strategic oversight of CRM while aligning closely — but distinctly — with marketing automation tools.
  • Define and track success metrics for CRM adoption, impact, and usability.

Team Leadership, Capacity Building & Operations (20%)

  • Lead and develop a high-performing Business Intelligence & Data team, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and delivery excellence.
  • Set and monitor KPIs/OKRs for data performance, analytics timelines, user satisfaction, and platform health, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Support team development through coaching and targeted growth plans in areas like advanced analytics, cloud architecture, AI/ML modeling, and nonprofit data strategy.
  • Manage key vendor relationships, including CRM consultants, to ensure quality service and value for tools, consultants, and platforms.
  • Deliver scalable, trusted data solutions to support cross-functional initiatives in fundraising, finance, digital, and operations.
  • Partner with key internal teams, including Fundraising, Digital, Finance, Operations, and Executive, to align data strategies with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Lead change management efforts to support user adoption of new data tools, systems, and practices

  • Strong understanding of data warehousing, ETL pipelines, and systems integration across platforms (CRM, finance, web, etc.).
  • Hands-on experience with modern cloud-based data tools (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Synapse, Snowflake) preferred.
  • Skilled in predictive analytics, segmentation, and statistical modeling, with familiarity in machine learning tools.
  • Strong command of SQL and best practices for data transformation, quality assurance, and data governance.
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations, including Law 25 and PIPEDA, with a strong focus on ethical data use.
