Job summary

BC Ferries is seeking a customer-minded Deckhand to support vessel operations and safety on our coastal routes. You will direct vehicle and foot traffic, communicate with officers, and perform safety rounds while assisting with maintenance and drills.

Applicants should hold MED A1/B2, MED B1 Survival Craft, and a valid Seafarers’ Medical Certificate; Bridge Watch rating is preferred.

Qualifications

  • Marine Emergency duties training STCW Basic Safety (MED A1 and MED B2).
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (MED B1).
  • Bridge Watch rating or higher certificate preferred.
  • Valid Seafarers’ Medical Certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Direct vehicle and foot passenger traffic on the vessel and to and from shore.
  • Communicate with ships’ officers and ticketing staff by voice or radio.
  • Check propane tanks are shut off and tagged, and secure car decks and gates.
  • Perform general ships’ husbandry, cleaning and maintenance of interior/exterior.
  • Patrol the vessel for hazards and ensure passenger compliance with regulations.
  • Stand fog/bridge/anchor watch and assist as quartermaster when required.
  • Participate in drills, emergency duties, and routine checks for safety equipment.

Education

STCW Basic Safety MED A1/B2
Proficiency in Survival Craft MED B1
Bridge Watch rating (preferred)

DECKHAND
The opportunity

We are seeking a customer-minded individual who plays a critical role in vessel operations and safety.

Reporting to theMate, Deckhands are responsible for:

  • Directing vehicle and foot passenger traffic on the vessel, and to and from shore to the vessel
  • Communicating in person and or by radio with ships’ officers and ticketing staff
  • Checking propane tanks are shut off, and tagged
  • Securing car decks and foot passenger gates prior to departure
  • Carrying out under direction general ships’ husbandry, cleaning and maintenance duties of the interior and exterior of the vessel including but not limited to garbagepickup, cleaning mess rooms,stairwellsand interior windows; pushing,pullingand lifting heavy stores;chipping and scrapping surfaces; and painting
  • Patrolling the vessel to watch for unusual situations, potential safetyhazardsand passenger compliance with regulations; standing fog,bridgeor anchorwatch; steeringthe vessel under the direction of a deck officer when serving as a quartermaster; and keeping a constant lookout for marine traffic and navigational hazards
  • Performingadditionalduties as assigned which may include standby anchors during docking;participatingin fire and boat drills;performing emergency duties;conductingcheckoffsfor self-contained breathing apparatus andfirefighting; doing vehicle counts;assistingwith annual refit and life raft exchange; spreading salt; splicing rope; taking inventory; and changing navigation lights
What you bring to the team

This position requires Marine Emergency dutiestraining – STCWBasic Safety (MED A1 and MED B2) andProficiency inSurvival Craft (MED B1). You have the abilityto react in a safe and effective manner during an emergency andto direct andcontrol vehicles and passengers. You have aworking knowledge of safe work practices and seamanshipand ability to climb ladders, handle ships’lines and move heavy objects.

Preference may be shown to applicants with a Bridge Watch rating or higher certificate. Applicants must hold a valid Seafarers’ Medical Certificate.
