Job summary

BC Ferries Tsawwassen is seeking a Deckhand (Casual) to support vessel operations and safety. The role involves directing vehicle and foot passengers, coordinating with crew, and performing maintenance and safety duties aboard the vessel.

Requirements include Marine Emergency duties training (STCW MED A1/B2) and a Seafarers’ Medical Certificate. Preference may be given to applicants with a Bridge Watch rating or higher.

Qualifications

  • Marine Emergency Duties training – STCW Basic Safety (MED A1 and MED B2) required.
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft (MED B1) preferred.
  • Bridge Watch rating or higher may be an asset.
  • Valid Seafarers’ Medical Certificate required.

Responsibilities

  • Direct vehicle and foot passenger traffic on the vessel and to/from shore.
  • Communicate with ships’ officers and ticketing staff by radio or in person.
  • Ensure propane tanks are shut off and tagged.
  • Secure car decks and passenger gates before departure.
  • Perform ships’ husbandry, cleaning and maintenance tasks onboard.
  • Patrol for safety hazards and enforce regulations; stand fog/bridge/anchorwatch.
  • Assist with drills, checks, inventory, and navigation lights as needed.

The opportunity

We are seeking a customer-minded individual who plays a critical role in vessel operations and safety.

Reporting to theMate, Deckhands are responsible for:

  • Directing vehicle and foot passenger traffic on the vessel, and to and from shore to the vessel
  • Communicating in person and or by radio with ships’ officers and ticketing staff
  • Checking propane tanks are shut off, and tagged
  • Securing car decks and foot passenger gates prior to departure
  • Carrying out under direction general ships’ husbandry, cleaning and maintenance duties of the interior and exterior of the vessel including but not limited to garbagepickup, cleaning mess rooms,stairwellsand interior windows; pushing,pullingand lifting heavy stores;chipping and scrapping surfaces; and painting
  • Patrolling the vessel to watch for unusual situations, potential safetyhazardsand passenger compliance with regulations; standing fog,bridgeor anchorwatch; steeringthe vessel under the direction of a deck officer when serving as a quartermaster; and keeping a constant lookout for marine traffic and navigational hazards
  • Performingadditionalduties as assigned which may include standby anchors during docking;participatingin fire and boat drills;performing emergency duties;conductingcheckoffsfor self-contained breathing apparatus andfirefighting; doing vehicle counts;assistingwith annual refit and life raft exchange; spreading salt; splicing rope; taking inventory; and changing navigation lights

What you bring to the team

This position requires Marine Emergency dutiestraining – STCWBasic Safety (MED A1 and MED B2) andProficiency inSurvival Craft (MED B1). You have the abilityto react in a safe and effective manner during an emergency and to direct andcontrol vehicles and passengers. You have a working knowledge of safe work practices and seamanshipand ability to climb ladders, handle ships’lines and move heavy objects.

Preference may be shown to applicants with a Bridge Watch rating or higher certificate. Applicants must hold a valid Seafarers’ Medical Certificate.
