Job summary

BC Ferries seeks a Chief Engineer, Intermediate for Saltery Bay to oversee the safe and efficient operation of propulsion and power systems aboard our vessel. You will supervise watch teams, plan maintenance and coordinate repairs within the drydock program, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

You will lead engineering drills, supervise a diverse crew, and contribute to safety improvements and efficiency initiatives.

Qualifications

  • First or Second-Class Motor Certificate required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Completion of supervisory or business courses is an asset.
  • Experience as Chief Engineer or Watch Engineer with supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe, efficient operation of propulsion and power systems.
  • Monitor, maintain, and document vessel structure and onboard equipment.
  • Plan and direct regular emergency repairs and drydock/maintenance programs.
  • Assign watch crews to machinery and supervise engineering maintenance.
  • Lead drills and safety trainings; ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate with regulators and conduct inspections as required.

CHIEF ENGINEER (INTERMEDIATE)

Saltery Bay

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking applications from individuals interested in being considered for the Shipboard Management position of Chief Engineer, Intermediate at Saltery Bay.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Chief Engineer, you add value in the following key areas:

  • Ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of the ships propulsion and power systems
  • Monitoring, maintaining, and documenting the condition of the ships structure
  • Planning, directing, and implementing regular emergency repairs and alterations and assisting the overall drydock and refit program
  • Planning, directing, and organizing assignments of the watch crew to work on machinery that may alter the performance of the vessel
  • Supervising a comprehensive vessel engineering maintenance program including inspecting the appearance, condition, and function of all onboard equipment
  • Liaison with regulatory bodies regarding ship inspections and conducting engineering crew inspections to ensure awareness and compliance with regulatory company standards
  • Making operational judgements based on mechanical capability and conditions
  • Leading, directing and training crews and conducting regular drills in responding to fire, safety, confined spaces and evacuation drills and other emergency situations
  • Assisting the Engineering Superintendent in developing and implementing safety, operational, and employee performance improvements and efficiencies
  • Ensuring security compliance with the vessel security plan, applicable legislation, regulations, and company policy and procedures, conducting security equipment inspections and audits as required, and reporting and correcting deficiencies
  • Performs other duties as required
What you bring to the team

Education/Academic Requirements:

  • First or Second-Class Motor Certificate
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite of applications
  • Completion of supervisory and business courses would be an asset

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Experience as Chief Engineer or Watch Engineer in a position at the equivalent certification level
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience

The target salary range: $135,600 - $150,700 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the successful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
