Position Title- Oracle Database Administrator

Job Summary –

The Database Specialist must have an in-depth understanding of the technology, applications, and business processes. A Database Specialist (DBA) acts as a mentor and establishes policies and procedures with the application and development teams to improve availability and protect operations. The role provides solution engineering, support, and administration for database systems and infrastructure.

Specializes in Oracle database, Oracle RAC & Data Guard, Oracle Spatial, and Oracle Exadata. Considered an asset experience with Versant, CockroachDB, GCP, Terraform, Ansible, Python, Prometheus, and Grafana.

Main responsibilities

Operational Support

• Define, document, communicate, and enforce monitoring, observability, and automation standards and best practices.
• Participate in initiatives related to monitoring, automation, optimization, capacity planning, emergency response, change management, and process improvements.
• Ensure all components of a DBMS, including storage, archiving, capacity management, high availability, backup, and recovery, are correctly configured and monitored.
• Maintain data integrity and security by managing roles and permissions.
• Manage production, UAT, and development database environments.
• Manage backups, restorations, and replications.
• Review and approve change controls.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks.
• Review infrastructure changes and implementations for quality.
• Collaborate to develop and implement process improvements.
• Define KPIs related to capacity and performance.

Services

• Ensure database access is reliable and responsive.
• Respond to production incidents.
• Participate in projects to upgrade infrastructure.
• Document root cause analysis of database issues.
• Support resolution of complex issues.
• Monitor and tune performance.
• Support high-availability clustered environments.
• Perform system admin tasks and generate operational reports.
• Handle capacity planning.
• Maintain database and application tools.
• Provide 24x7 on-call support on rotation.
• Create detailed infrastructure documentation.
• Present topics to upper management.

Delivery

• Design and configure new database installations.
• Manage database security models.
• Minimize downtime and optimize query responses.
• Regularly test for data security and integrity.
• Monitor performance, apply patches, and upgrades.
• Follow standards and procedures.
• Modify database structures as needed.
• Understand business processes and data flow.
• Handle complex problems as SME.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in computer science + 5+ years or College degree + 10 years in a similar role.
• Database certification (asset).
• GCP certification (asset).
• At least 2 years experience in cloud computing and monitoring, with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform and Ansible.

Technical Skills

• Expertise in Oracle RDBMS, RAC, Data Guard, Exadata.
• Knowledge of Oracle Spatial.
• Experience with multiple RDBMS is an asset.
• High-availability technologies and best practices.
• Proficiency in PL SQL, functions, and procedures.
• Data modeling (asset).
• Familiarity with Linux, programming languages like Perl or Python.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Strong infrastructure knowledge (Storage, Network, OS, Hypervisors).

Experience

• 7-10+ years in database management.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
