About The Role

The Database Administrator is a key member of the Global Digital Services team, reporting to the Director, Applications & Shared Services. This Database Administrator role will manage and optimize our corporate database systems to support the ICHSC program as part our work with the Ontario Ministry of Health to deliver quality assurance programs enhancing patient safety.

The Database Administrator will ensure the health, performance, and evolution of our database systems, providing advice and guidance to team members and key stakeholders. You will be responsible for maintaining system integrity, ensuring security compliance, automating routine tasks, and modernizing our data landscape to better serve our internal and external stakeholders. The Database Administrator will also collaborate and advise in the development of functional requirements and strategies related to the provincial program.

Main Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and updating Microsoft SQL Server environments, ensuring system health, performance optimization, and adherence to governance standards.
  • Managing backups, restores, database integrity checks, and disaster recovery protocols.
  • Monitoring performance indicators, executing index maintenance, and fine-tuning queries for optimal performance.
  • Participating in ETL processes, handling data extraction, transformation, and loading.
  • Developing documentation such as data dictionaries to standardize data definitions across systems.
  • Contributing to special projects, including the development of data anonymization functionality to enable safe use of rich datasets in development and testing environments.
  • Assisting with the sunsetting of legacy databases and collaborating on strategies for technical debt reduction across our data assets.
  • Conducting database-level security audits and assisting in implementing measures to strengthen data protection and compliance.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional Scrum teams, business stakeholders, and IT Operations to maintain data quality, security, and system reliability.
  • Upholding data governance practices in accordance with relevant legislation (e.g., Privacy Act, PIPEDA) and industry standards (e.g., ISO 8000).

Must Have Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional experience in database administration.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server specifically MySQL and PostgreSQL.
  • Hands-on experience with database structures, data lifecycle management, and backup/recovery strategies.
  • Hands on experience supporting ETL processes and developing data documentation.
  • Proven skills in performance monitoring, query optimization, and database automation.
  • Strong familiarity with database security best practices and conducting security audits.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in technology or a related field is an asset.
  • Comfortable with Agile/Scrum environments and collaborating with technical and business teams.
  • Exceptional analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to translate technical concepts to our clients.
