Job description

The Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.

The Advanced Research and Knowledge Management (ARKM) division leads a data and analytics program that supports data-driven, evidence-based, policy, operational, and business decisions. ARKM also leads the development of an education and training program that is unique to the ASC, focused on the skills and knowledge needed in a securities regulatory environment. It also serves as an expert internal resource for updates, research, and analysis on existing, increasing and emerging risks that require regulatory responses, and considers the impact of innovation in capital markets through technology testing.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Data and Analytics, the Data Specialist will work closely with data scientists, data analysts, and other ASC colleagues to understand the requirements for the datasets being prepared. You will provide support in the areas of data acquisition and management of data assets. You will have the opportunity to design and optimize databases for use within the data and analytics team, measure and report on data quality, create and automate ETL processes, and document your work. There is also an opportunity to prototype and automate data solutions for other divisions.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Profiling data by measuring and monitoring and preparing metrics.
  • Preparing datasets by gathering and combining, transforming and cleansing, and creating databases or file storage.
  • Automating and optimizing data related processes.
  • Documenting data and data processes.
  • Participating in CSA and Heads of Agencies (HOA) groups.
  • Acting as a local steward for national systems, supporting governance programs.

The ideal candidate will possess

  • An undergraduate degree in computer sciences or engineering, or a quantitative field.
  • Six years of experience collecting, cleansing and preparing data for use by others.
  • Ongoing education in preparing datasets and automating processes to maintain data.
  • Expertise with SQL databases, including schema design and optimization and automating data flows.
  • Experience developing reliable, well-documented tools and processes in Python, Git for version control and DataOps methodology
