Job description

Meet Benevity

Benevity is the way the world does good, providing companies (and their employees) with technology to take social action on the issues they care about. Through giving, volunteering, grantmaking, employee resource groups and micro-actions, we help most of the Fortune 100 brands build better cultures and use their power for good. We’re also one of the first B Corporations in Canada, meaning we’re as committed to purpose as we are to profits. We have people working all over the world, including Canada, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and more!

We're looking for a Data Modeler & Data Owner/Steward to help shape and manage our enterprise data architecture and governance strategy. In this role, you'll design scalable data models while championing data integrity, security, and compliance. You’ll partner with cross-functional teams—including business stakeholders, data engineers, and analytics professionals—to build well-structured, high-quality data that drives informed decision-making across the organization.

What you’ll do:

Data Modeling & Architecture

  • Design and maintain relational, dimensional, and NoSQL data models to support both operational and analytical needs
  • Promote best practices in data modeling, including normalization, indexing, and performance optimization
  • Collaborate with Data Engineers to build scalable data structures in modern platforms like AWS, Azure, GCP, and Snowflake
  • Maintain metadata repositories and ensure clear data lineage and traceability
  • Use techniques like Event Modeling and Event Storming to align system design with business workflows and real-time data flows
  • Apply Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles to create scalable, context-aware data systems

Data Ownership & Governance

  • Serve as a data steward for enterprise domains, driving data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across platforms
  • Develop and uphold inclusive data governance policies that support privacy, security, and compliance (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, PIPEDA)
  • Maintain accessible data dictionaries, standards, and classification frameworks to support clarity and consistency
  • Collaborate across teams to address data challenges, improve quality, and promote standardization

Data Quality & Stewardship

  • Establish validation rules and perform audits to ensure ongoing data quality and usability
  • Work with diverse business teams to validate and enhance data completeness and relevance
  • Support Master Data Management (MDM) initiatives to deliver trusted, unified data across the organization
  • Lead inclusive data stewardship practices through training, documentation, and knowledge-sharing forums

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Analytics, Engineering, and IT teams to ensure data is modeled for effective reporting and AI/ML use
  • Collaborate with Product to define data responsibilities, KPIs, and SLAs for key datasets
  • Act as a subject matter expert in data governance, modeling, and architecture to promote alignment in data-driven decision-making

What you’ll bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in data modeling, governance, or stewardship in dynamic environments
  • Solid knowledge of relational and non-relational databases, data warehouses, and data lake architectures
  • Proven experience implementing data governance frameworks at scale in mid-to-large organizations
  • Familiarity with AI/ML-driven data governance tools is a plus
  • Industry experience in finance, healthcare, e-commerce, or technology is a strong asset
  • Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field

Technical Skills & Expertise:

  • Data Modeling Tools:Erwin, DBT, PowerDesigner, Lucidchart, Visio, ER/Studio, SQLDBM, Dataedo
  • Databases & Warehousing: SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery
  • Data Governance & Quality Tools: Collibra, Informatica, Talend, Alation, Data Catalogs
  • Cloud Platforms: AWS, Azure, GCP (BigQuery, Databricks, Synapse)
  • Programming & Query Languages: SQL, Python, JSON, YAML
  • ETL/ELT Pipelines: Experience working with Data Engineers to define ETL processes
  • Compliance & Security: Knowledge of data privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA, PIPEDA)
