Job summary

Loblaw Companies Limited in Brampton, ON is seeking a Data Engineer II to join the Data & AI platform team. You will help design, build, and maintain cloud services, data pipelines, and deployment pipelines to support analytics and business operations.

You will collaborate with SRE, security, and business teams to improve platform reliability, automate deployments, and enable AI-enabled data discovery. The role emphasizes scalable data solutions and modern cloud-native practices.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional experience in data engineering, software engineering, or cloud platform engineering, including supporting production applications.
  • Experience with Python, SQL, Git, cloud platforms and data services, preferably GCP, BigQuery, and Google Cloud Storage, as well as Kubernetes, preferably GKE, Docker, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines, preferably GitLab CI/CD.
  • Experience developing, deploying, or supporting Apache Airflow workflows and troubleshooting workflow orchestration issues.
  • Familiarity with generative AI concepts, including large language models (LLMs), tool calling, and MCP, and an understanding of integrating AI capabilities with enterprise data platforms.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including modular design, automated testing, code reviews, monitoring, and technical documentation.
  • Understanding of relational and NoSQL databases, messaging systems, and reliable data processing patterns, including retries, idempotency, and fault tolerance.
  • Ability to apply software engineering and site reliability practices to automate operations and improve platform availability.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development, integration, deployment, and ongoing operation of generative AI agents and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations to simplify data discovery, SQL development, and pipeline creation.
  • Design, build, maintain, and optimize data platform services, data pipelines, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) infrastructure to support reliable data processing and business insights.
  • Maintain and improve Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) application configurations and Helm deployments for workflow orchestration, metadata management, and other data platform services.
  • Manage deployment automation, CI/CD pipelines, container images, and application upgrades to enable reliable releases of critical data platform services.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot application, pipeline, and infrastructure issues; participate in incident response, perform root cause analysis, and implement fixes that reduce recurring failures.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, site reliability engineering, security, and business teams to deliver platform enhancements and support application onboarding and migrations.
  • Automate operational tasks and evaluate new technologies through proofs of concept to improve platform performance, scalability, and reliability.

Loblaw Technology & Analytics is looking for a Data Engineer II to join the Data & AI platform team.   • Exposure to Vertex AI, Google Agent Development Kit (ADK), LangChain, or LangGraph, including integrating AI agents with enterprise APIs and data platforms.
