Job description

Our client is a highly respected international logistics organization with a strong Canadian presence and a long history of helping businesses move goods with accuracy, care, and confidence.

Global Reach, Local Accountability

This is an organization with the scale, systems, and service depth to support complex supply chains across multiple modes of transportation. At the same time, its Canadian operations remain close enough to the customer to make practical decisions, solve problems quickly, and build long-term relationships.

Logistics With Standards

The company places a strong emphasis on quality, compliance, safety, and dependable service. Customers rely on them not simply to move freight, but to protect timelines, manage complexity, and keep business moving when transportation challenges arise.

A Place to Lead and Build

For the right logistics leader, this is an opportunity to join a stable, established organization where operational discipline, commercial thinking, and people leadership all matter. It is a role for someone who enjoys improving how a department performs, how a team works together, and how customers experience the business.

Compensation

This permanent, full-time opportunity offers an annual salary of $60,000 to $70,000*, along with a well-rounded compensation and benefits package that includes:

  • Health benefits, including medical, dental and vision coverage
  • RRSP and DPSP programs with company matching
  • Paid vacation and sick days
  • Ongoing professional development and career growth opportunities
  • Permanent, full-time stability with a respected logistics employer
  • A hybrid work arrangement requiring four days per week in the office
  • A consistent Monday-to-Friday schedule from 900 a.m. to 500 p.m.

*The stated compensation range reflects the full scope of the role as currently structured and is provided in accordance with pay transparency requirements. Offers are determined based on relevant experience, demonstrated skills, internal equity, and alignment with the role’s requirements. The upper end of the range is typically reserved for candidates who fully meet all requirements and qualifications outlined in this posting and the official job description.

The Opportunity

Accurate customs work keeps international supply chains moving.

Every tariff classification, tax treatment, permit and release decision can affect whether a shipment reaches its destination on time, whether the correct duties are paid and whether the importer remains compliant with Canadian regulations.

As a Customs Specialist, you will be trusted with the technical decisions behind that process. You will review and process customs entries across multiple modes of transportation, interpret regulatory requirements, determine the correct tariff and tax treatment, and provide practical guidance to clients and internal teams.

This opportunity is well suited to an experienced customs professional who wants to do more than process routine transactions. Your knowledge will be called upon to answer complex questions, resolve entry issues, improve accuracy and support the broader brokerage and compliance operation.

The regular weekday schedule offers predictability, while the hybrid arrangement provides flexibility without losing the collaboration and access that come from working alongside experienced customs professionals.

Position Description

Reporting within the customs brokerage operation, the Customs Specialist will be responsible for the accurate release, classification, rating and accounting of import entries across all modes of transportation.

The position combines detailed customs-entry work with research, regulatory interpretation, problem-solving and direct support for clients and colleagues.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing, reviewing, releasing, rating and accounting for customs entries across multiple transportation modes
  • Determining accurate tariff classifications, including applicable Chapter 99 end-use provisions
  • Applying the appropriate GST or HST exemptions, Orders in Council and other available customs treatments
  • Identifying and calculating excise taxes and Special Import Measures Act duties when applicable
  • Preparing voluntary entries and temporary import entries as required
  • Reviewing shipment and product information for compliance with Participating Government Agency requirements
  • Confirming that required permits, licences and supporting documentation are in place
  • Maintaining client product and parts databases with accurate HS classifications, free trade agreement information and government-agency requirements
  • Reviewing free trade certificates and related documentation for completeness
  • Advising clients when information is missing, incomplete or requires correction
  • Researching customs, valuation, classification and regulatory questions
  • Providing practical solutions to clients, brokerage colleagues, operational teams and supervisors
  • Assisting with release, rating and compliance matters that require additional technical knowledge
  • Helping ensure customs activity is accurate, timely and consistent with current regulatory requirements
Experience

The successful candidate will bring at least five years of hands-on Canadian customs experience, ideally gained within customs brokerage, freight forwarding, logistics, importing or another regulated trade environment.

Your experience should include several of the following areas:

  • Customs release, entry preparation, rating, classification and accounting
  • Tariff classification and HS code research
  • Customs valuation
  • GST and HST application
  • SIMA duties, excise taxes, Orders in Council and GST exemptions
  • Temporary imports and voluntary entries
  • Free trade agreement documentation and certificate reviews

  • Responding to operational customs questions from clients and internal departments
  • Managing time-sensitive files with competing priorities and firm deadlines
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • CTCS designation is considered an asset

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills in English
  • A consultative approach to explaining requirements and resolving concerns
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • The ability to manage several active priorities at once
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work effectively with limited supervision
  • The composure to work through urgent requests, competing priorities and firm deadlines
