Job summary

You will manage bail hearings, charge screening, case resolution, and trial decisions while engaging with victims, police, and witnesses. Strong analytical and drafting skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Crown Prosecutor levels require specific years of legal experience as listed (0–4, 4, 11).For foreign degrees, NCA accreditation may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Attend bail hearings, charge screening, and early case resolution.
  • Prosecute cases and make decisions on proceeding to trial or discontinuing prosecutions.
  • Provide evidence and legal arguments to the Court; work with victims, witnesses, and police.
  • Draft legal opinions, briefs, and court documents; manage complex prosecutions.

Crown Prosecutor Incentives
Crown Prosecutors shall receive a retention incentive after one year of continual employment in the Grande Prairie Office. This retention incentive shall be ten percent (10%) of the Crown Prosecutor’s current salary as of the date the one (1) continual year of employment is reached. Also, Crown Prosecutors, get one earned day off per month for excess hours worked.

Are you a lawyer with exceptional litigation experience? The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) is seeking a Crown Prosecutor to join its Prosecutions team at the Grande Prairie Regional Office in Alberta.
As a Crown Prosecutor, you will play a key role in delivering justice through fearless, fair, and effective prosecutions. The daily responsibilities of Crown Prosecutors encompass a broad range of duties, including bail hearings, charge screening, early case resolution, alternative measures, decisions on whether to proceed to trial or discontinue a prosecution, conducting prosecutions, entering stays of proceedings, withdrawing charges, plea resolutions, providing disclosure, electing to proceed summarily or by indictment, taking positions on sentencing, drafting legal opinions and briefings, working with victims, witnesses, and police, and launching appeals.
Specific accountabilities of the position include:

  • Ensuring the public interest is served and a just result is achieved.
  • Providing the Court with evidence and legal arguments that are fair, accurate, and complete.
  • Assigned prosecutions of serious and complex cases in a highly competent manner.
  • Working effectively with victims of crime and their families.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • The ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with stakeholders across the justice system.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta isrequired.

  • Crown Prosecutor 1: a minimum of 0-4 years legal experience isrequired.
  • Crown Prosecutor 2: a minimum of 4 years legal experience isrequired.
  • Crown Prosecutor 3: a minimum of 11 years legal experience isrequired.

Other requirement

  • For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.
  • A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License and travel within the province.

This opportunity is located in Grande Prairie.
The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
Travel within Alberta to circuit court locations is a requirement for this role.
Final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo security screening. Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate.
