Job summary

The Government of Alberta's Justice ministry in Edmonton seeks a Crown Prosecutor in the Technology and Internet Crimes Unit to lead complex prosecutions at the intersection of criminal law and digital technology.

You will handle cases involving online child exploitation, provide pre-charge advice, draft warrants, and collaborate with police and national/international partners. A law degree and Alberta bar eligibility are required, with 4–15+ years depending on level.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or JD and Alberta Bar eligibility.
• Crown Prosecutor 2: minimum 4 years legal experience.
• Crown Prosecutor 3: minimum 11 years legal experience.
• Crown Prosecutor 4: minimum 15+ years legal experience.
• Prosecution experience in criminal law is required.
• For non-Canadian degrees, NCA accreditation proof is required.
• Valid Alberta driver’s licence; travel within the province required.

Responsibilities

• Prosecute cases involving online child exploitation, CSAEM, sexual interference and related offences.
• Provide pre-charge advice to law enforcement on investigations.
• Draft and review search warrants and production orders.
• Advise police on the legality of investigative techniques in technology‑related crimes.

As a prosecutor in the Technology and Internet Crimes Unit, you will lead complex and meaningful cases involving online child exploitation, working at the forefront of criminal law, technology, and victim protection. This role focuses on prosecuting complex technology-related offences involving the sexual exploitation of children, including online child luring, child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM), sexual interference, and sexual assault. Prosecutors work closely with law enforcement providing pre-charge legal advice, supporting investigations, and advising on search warrants and production orders.

Roles and Responsibilities for Prosecutor in Technology and Internet Crime:

Criminal Prosecution

• Prosecute cases involving online child exploitation, child luring, child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM), sexual interference, and sexual assault.
• Handle complex and challenging criminal cases requiring advanced litigation and practice management skills.
• Provide pre-charge advice to law enforcement on investigations.
• Assist in drafting and reviewing search warrants and production orders.
• Advise police on the legality of investigative techniques in technology-related criminal cases.
• Work closely with police and prosecutors in Alberta, across Canada, and internationally.
• Offer litigation support to other prosecutors on technology-related issues.

Training and Education

• Assist in the training of investigators and prosecutors on technology crime issues.
• Deliver community education to children, parents, and other interest groups on internet safety and online child exploitation.

Exposure to Sensitive Material

• Handle and review images and video content related to child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM) as part of casework.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD), and active membership or immediate eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Alberta isrequired.

• Crown Prosecutor 2: a minimum of 4 years legal experience isrequired.
• Crown Prosecutor 3: a minimum of 11 years legal experience isrequired.
• Crown Prosecutor 4: a minimum of 15+ years legal experience is required.

Prosecution experience in criminal law is required.

For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) isrequired.

A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle Operators License is a requirement. Travel within the province isrequired.

The Hours of Work are 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.Travel within Alberta to circuit court locations is a requirement for this role.
