Job summary

Vancouver Pile Driving Ltd (Vanpile) in North Vancouver, BC, seeks an experienced Red Seal Crane Operator to support marine and heavy civil construction. Minimum 5 years of crane operation in marine environments, with pile driving, dredging, and rock placement.

You will read load charts, assess capacities, supervise deckhands, and maintain crane systems, all while ensuring safety on water and compliance with WorkSafeBC.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of crane operation in marine/heavy civil construction.
  • Experience with pile driving, dredging, and rock placement in marine applications.
  • Experience operating friction cranes and marine derrick equipment is a strong asset.
  • Valid driver’s licence with a clean abstract.
  • Valid Crane Operator Certification (Provincial or Red Seal).
  • Marine First Aid and MED A3 Level 2/3 certifications are assets.

Are you a skilled Red Seal Crane Operator with a minimum of 5 years of experience in marine and heavy civil construction? Do you take pride in operating safely, working with precision, and delivering quality results in challenging marine environments? If so, we want to hear from you.

We are looking for an experienced Crane Operator to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a key part in supporting marine construction operations, including the movement and placement of materials, pile installation, dredging activities, and rock placement. You are someone who understands the complexities of working on the water and can operate safely and effectively in changing marine conditions.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate heavy equipment to load, transport, move, spread, and place materials on construction sites using all required attachments.
  • Operate cranes to lift, move, position, and place equipment and materials, as well as perform dredging and pile driving activities in a marine environment.
  • Calculate crane capacities and load weights to ensure safe rigging and hoisting in all operating configurations.
  • Read and interpret load charts and always operate cranes within rated capacities.
  • Lead by example and work collaboratively as part of a team while supervising deckhands and deck engineers when required.
  • Read and interpret basic construction and marine drawings.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of marine operations, including weather conditions, tides, currents, derrick movements, clam bucket operations, tugboat coordination, and dozer boat usage.
  • Operate and navigate Calm Vision or similar marine positioning systems.
  • Assemble and operate cranes in accordance with manufacturer and company specifications.
  • Complete pre-operational inspections and preventative maintenance on cranes and related equipment.
  • Immediately report equipment defects, malfunctions, or repair requirements to the supervisor.
  • Maintain awareness of all site conditions that may impact safe operations, including overhead utilities, other workers, mobile equipment, and pedestrian traffic.
  • Inspect, maintain, and perform minor repairs on deck mechanical and hydraulic systems associated with derricks, cranes, and barges.
  • Maintain accurate crane logbooks, inspection records, and documentation in compliance with regulatory and company requirements.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with WorkSafeBC, company policies, and industry safety standards.
Qualifications
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating cranes in marine and heavy civil construction environments.
  • Experience with pile driving, dredging, and rock or material placement in marine applications is required.
  • Experience operating friction cranes and marine derrick equipment is considered a strong asset.
Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of marine construction, heavy civil construction, and underground utility projects.
  • Familiarity with marine navigation, tides, currents, weather conditions, and safe marine operations.
Licensing & Certifications
  • Valid driver's licence with a clean driver's abstract (in accordance with company insurance requirements).
  • Valid Crane Operator Certification (Provincial Certification or Red Seal equivalent).
  • Marine Basic First Aid and MED A3, Level 2, or Level 3 certifications are considered assets.
Technical Skills
  • Proficient in the operation of cranes, heavy equipment, loaders, excavators, and marine construction equipment.
  • Strong understanding of crane assembly, capacity calculations, rigging requirements, and safe lifting practices.
  • Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Working knowledge of local waterways and marine operating conditions.
