Job summary

McGill University, through the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE), seeks an instructor for Langue mohawk 1 (EDEC 277 760). The course will be offered in Kahnawà:ke with sessions Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings (18:00–21:15) during Fall 2026.

The instructor must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent experience, possess expert Mohawk content knowledge, and be prepared to adapt the curriculum to community context while engaging in course planning prior to start date.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree required; exceptional cases may be considered with relevant experience.
• Expert knowledge of Mohawk language content as described in course description.
• Familiarity with Quebec education program (QEP) and partnering school board curriculum.
• Knowledge of the 13 Ministère de l’Éducation competencies.
• Understanding of colonialism impact and equity, diversity, and inclusion in pedagogy.
• Experience teaching or consulting for the partnering school board.
• Experience teaching in Quebec elementary school system.
• Experience teaching similar courses to pre-service teachers and Indigenous communities.
• Ability to develop curriculum grounded in Indigenous knowledge and pedagogies.
• Willingness to adapt course content to community context and needs.

Responsibilities

• Modify the course to the educational, social, and cultural context of the community.
• Participate in course coordination and planning activities prior to the course start date (approx. two weeks in advance; online format).
• Deliver Mohawk Language 1 course in person in Kahnawà:ke as scheduled.

Course Number-Section and Title: EDEC 277 760 Mohawk Language 1

Course Description: Students will learn the Mohawk phonological system (including glottal stop, length mark, up and down stress). Syntactically and morphologically, they will focus on the pronoun system (tense included). Word generation conventions will be analyzed and Mohawk labels developed to describe how the language functions.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs): Education

• A Master’s degree (in exceptional circumstances applicants without a Master’s degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered).


• Expert knowledge of course content as outlined in the course description.


• Knowledge of the Quebec Education program (QEP) and the curriculum of the partnering school board with whom this course is being giving in collaboration.


• Familiarity with the 13 professional competencies specified in the Ministère de l’Éducation


• Knowledge of the impact of colonialism on Indigenous communities and proven record integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion.


• Experience as a teacher and/or consultant in the partnering school board for which this course is being delivered.


• Experience teaching in the Quebec elementary school system.


• Previous successful experience teaching similar course(s) to pre-service teachers.


• Previous successful experience teaching similar courses in Indigenous communities.


• Experience developing curriculum and/or instructional approaches grounded in Indigenous knowledge and pedagogies.


• Other Adherence to evolving program requirements concerning course content and program-developed competencies; course content and references must reflect the most current advances in the field.


• The course instructor is expected to demonstrate capacity and willingness to modify the course to the educational, social, and cultural context of the community in which it is being delivered.


• Availability to participate in course coordination and planning activities prior to the course start date (approximately two weeks in advance; online format).


• Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with Indigenous issues in First Nations and Inuit contexts, for example through prior teaching, community engagement, or relevant academic or professional work.
