Job summary

Taleo in New Westminster seeks a Youth Community Connections Coordinator to guide youth-focused, non-medical social services supporting early intervention, prevention and education as part of the City’s Youth Resiliency Strategy.

You will lead, supervise and train staff and volunteers, develop wellness plans, build partnerships, and deliver trauma-informed training to staff and partners, with a focus on at-risk youth and gang prevention.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in child and youth care, social work, psychology, criminology or related education and experience.
• Experience in trauma-informed practice, program planning, youth mental health, case management, equity, diversity and inclusion, and conflict resolution.
• Training in gang prevention, restorative justice, or community development or equivalent.
• Knowledge of community resources and services.
• Minimum two years recent related experience.
• Standard First Aid and CPR Level C/AED.
• Clear Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Flexible schedule with varied shifts.

Responsibilities

Job description

The Youth Community Connections Coordinator plays an integral role in providing community based, non-medical, social services focused support for early intervention, prevention and education to reduce risk factors affecting youth. This position leads, supervises, and supports the development, delivery, and evaluation of programs, events, and services aligned with the City of New Westminster’s Youth Resiliency Strategy. The role develops and implements initiatives supporting at-risk and vulnerable youth, and recruits, trains, and directs staff and volunteers involved in recreation programs. As a technical specialist, facilitator, and resource, the position provides primary prevention and ongoing support to youth at risk of, or impacted by gang involvement. Responsibilities include conducting assessments, developing wellness plans, providing referrals, and supporting participants and their families. The position builds and maintains partnerships with community organizations, supports initiatives that promote youth well-being, resilience, and community connection, and develops and delivers training for staff and community partners on best practices, emerging trends, and trauma-informed approaches.

• Degree or diploma in child and youth care, social work, psychology, criminology or a combination of relevant education and experience deemed suitable by the employer.
• Sound related experience in trauma-informed practice, program planning, youth mental health, case management, equity, diversity and inclusion, and conflict resolution.
• Training in gang prevention, restorative justice, or community development or an equivalent combination of training and experience of the above.
• Knowledge of community resources, programs and services.
• Minimum two years recent related experience.
• Standard First Aid and CPR Level "C/AED".
• The successful applicant must be able to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.
• Must be available to work a flexible schedule and a variety of shifts based on operational requirements.

Job Skills and Abilities:

• Considerable knowledge of youth issues, including mental health challenges and risks associated with gang involvement.
• Considerable knowledge of the social and cultural issues, challenges and opportunities related to youth and diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
• Sound knowledge of equity, diversity and inclusion principles in all aspects of program delivery and team management.
• Sound knowledge of a variety of community resources, programs and services for youth including government agencies, non-for-profit organizations and local community groups.
• Ability to develop wellness plans and provide referrals to address challenges in crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
• Ability to support youth in accessing and participating in a broad range of opportunities, programs and events that align with their interests and needs.
• Ability to build rapport with and support youth in a strengths-based, trauma informed manner.
• Ability to lead a team, collaborative working groups and facilitate training sessions.
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral or written form and clearly explain instructions to others.
• Ability to work independently in a timely and organized manner.
• Strong computer skills
